No radio reception
Stock head unit
The antenna goes up and down fine, the cd player works, the radio tries to work but I can't get a reception.
Antenna is plugged in the back of the head unit but I can't figure out how to check the plug for the exterior antenna, cant find it.
Or do you think the head unit is just going out?
Thanks

If this is an FC, there is a second plug inside the driver-side rear quarter panel that the power antenna plugs into. To get at it, simply remove the plastic trim piece along the top (you may have to remove the rear speaker cover) and then pull away the carpet. Inside, is the power antenna which has two plugs: one is a din plug for power, the other is a black coax cable (the ground wire is on one of the bracket screws).
Here's a rough diagram of what's between the antenna and the radio:
ANTENNA--plug--CABLE--plug--RADIO
If the plugs are ok, it could be a bad antenna or a bad receiver. It could also be a bad cable as well (it could have been damaged at some point in the run). Try using another antenna or plug in another headunit that you know works if you can.

The FD has a two antenna system. The 2nd one is imbedded in the rear hatch glass. So I figure if one antenna isn't working, the other one should kick in. That would lead me to believe the problem is in your head unit. It comes out easily.....you just need some of those Ford removal tools you can probably get at any good auto parts or car stereo store. Some people have even used coat hangers to get it out. Once out, you can take the head unit to a shop for a diagnostic.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Yellow Dragon is no more
Sorry, the second antenna is not really a diversity antenna the way other systems use a second antennra. Therefore, it really isn't used to tune in radio stations. The problem could be your antenna or it could be the radio.

it just started happening after we installed the engine. is it possible to have messed anything up during the install that I can check?

Funny. I've been having the same problem for a while in my FD too (it's got a Bose system). I pulled the head unit once, thinking some wire must have come loose. Everything looked fine so I put it back and then resigned myself to listening to CDs. (Not a big deal to me.)
And yes, you can use a bent coat hanger to get it out. That's what I used.
If anyone finds the problem, please post.
