led taillights!

Well i got bored and decided to put some led's in my tails. I just did three seperate rings for now that will run off a PWM, I might add another ring and have it come on when the brakes are hit to grab the attention of other drivers. What do you guys think?

Bad pic i know.....

I am pretty sure he will do a GB instead of listing out the parts. He did a great job on offer a MUCH better price on the HID headlights compared to SakeBomb's which is a great alternative in my own opinion.

But it's up to him to release the list or not.

Good job on this mod OP. But personally I think if the LED are bigger rather than so tiny it will reflect better and LOOKS better. As of now, it looks like a small thin line and from far away, I am sure it wouldnt look very good.

But I think you've hit the spot on the concept just used bigger size LED I believe it makes the light look much more "meatier" you know what I am trying describe?

They are just some generic led rings i am going to use lumileds once my perf board arrives.

Here is a comparison between the plcc2 rings and the lumileds (straight line). The lumileds are more intense than the plcc2 smd's.

For those who are following my thread I made an array with lumileds which by the way are made by philips and used for tailights in OEM applications. (If that doesn't make theorie happy then i don't know what will)

Generic rings on the sides and the lumiled ring in the middle. The middle ring is a little out of alignment they are just taped in there.

I just cleaned up this thread at the request of turboIIrotary.

I'm getting sick of having threads derailed and having them turn into bitch-fests.

Guys, there are many paying vendors on this forum and they all deserve the right to post up their products without fear of reprisal or negative posts. Just like many shops build and port rotary engines, so too can multiple vendors sell headlights, taillights, etc.

Let the customers decide and speak with their wallets. The competitive thread crapping stops NOW.

I'm frankly sick and tired of spending time dealing with all of this, and am going to start handing out vacations if it persists. You know who you are, and if the shoes fits, then wear it. Otherwise, I'm not talking to you.

Some of you had legitimate non-inflammatory posts relating to the off-topic subject matter that were deleted as a matter of necessity to keep this thread on track at the OP's request.

Any questions or concerns please feel free to PM me. Otherwise, let's do turboIIrotary the courtesy of allowing his thread to remain on track. Thanks

Nice work. May I ask which Lumileds you are using? Also, have you color matched them to your lenses? You'll lose up to 80% of the total potential output if not:

I very much like the technical approach you are taking here, from the choice of leds to how you are going to power them. Look forward to seeing (pun intended) more As for the look, I'm more of a diffused lens look sort of guy but to each his own.

Anyways OP I really like the direction your lights are going. Brightness looks really good. Got any day time pics for comparison?

i might suggest moving the board towards the lens and using a round cylinder to cut off the LEDs from the rest of the housing as the light arrays from inside the lens without a cutoff. that is the idea i implemented with my FTPs for the FC, the light was bouncing around inside the housing too much. most people probably won't like seeing the board grid lit up or the surrounding walls, this will eliminate that issue. just for kicks to see how it looks you can just cut out some paper/styrofoam cups and place them temporarily in there.

@ David I am using superflux since oem cars were using them I decided to use them myself. The color is red-orange when I was researching I found that this color is the best for taillight use.

@Karack, The board is as close to the lens as i can put it here is a picture of what it looks in the day time. I might change out to a red acrylic lens to make the leds brighter but then the board would be easily visible.

My car doesn't have an engine so I could only take pictures in my garage. The weird thing is in person the led's look a lot brighter to the human eye than in the pictures. The camera doesn't capture the intensity of the led's if that makes sense.

running lights

different angle running lights

brake lights

different angle brake lights

I just noticed my 3rd brake light doesn't work lol I guess I will make the led too.

Lookin good man.

I'd be down for a set of these as long as I didn't have to wait a year for them.

You even consider running two rings of LEDs (one more set directly 'inside' of these) and having the inner set illuminate only under braking/turning?

that is how i would do it, but i would do more than just one inside ring, i would fill in the center section for the brake lights so they are more clearly visible. i would also put an isolator ring around that outer parking light set of LEDs to cut them off from the rest of the housing, but that's just me.

you can get them with 4 rings if you want.I was thinking of doing a similar project on my first gen with three rings being driving and brake lights followed by a super bright LED in the center that is only for brakes.

I am just doing one ring for now since I am low on leds once I order some more I will fill the center section for brakes.

@ Karack I made a cardboard ring and put them around the led array and it didn't make a difference.

I used paint to fill in the brake lights to see what it would look like and i'm not sure if i like it or not. It reminds me of those led trailor lights.
