Stock hood with a 1" vent at the back. Besides unless your tracking your car you will never rail on the engine enough to actually gain the full benifits of a vented hood. For a street driven car your really not gaining much because your not getting the car that hot to begin with. I had a mazdaspeed hood on my car for two years. I know.

I'm pretty sure that removing the weather stripping has been proven to be worthless by at least one FD owner (Wargasm did some experimenting). My engine bay gets VERY hot especially during the summer, so I would think it would be fairly beneficial in my case.

Here is the page: http://www.zeroglabs.com/rx7/freecooling.htm

You forgot to mention 95 degrees in the shade, at midnight, my friend

I can't see how removing that strip would do anything but put more air in. That's cowl induction there. Right at the base of the windshield there's a vacuum.

And ANY vented hood is better than stock. You don't even have to move to get it's benefits as the heat now has several (depending on the design) big *** holes to escape through. I'm sure that when you start to move, different designs will yield differnt results, but the premise is the same. Untrap the heat.

You guys are assuming that your engine bay is dangerously hot with a stock hood. I think I already made my argument on that. Besides if your temps are getting hot enough to prevent the cooling system from operating properly you'd better get a little more pro-active than just buying a vented hood. No offence to Brian (Wargasm) because i know him personaly and I think he is a nice guy but he would test the ridgity of marshmellows if you told him he might be able to see some differences between brands. In his "test" he states that his intake temps dropped by four degrees and then later by one degree. However I am talking about engine bay temps which Brian did not take measurements on. If you want to lower your intake temps then get some cold air ducted towards the intake. Don't spend a ton of cash on a vented hood expecting to see large drops in your intake temps when $15 worth of duct tape and sheet metal would have yielded better results. Also you failed to provide me with any data showing the difference in temps for any particular vented hood. So with that being said how you can you say that a vented hood makes your car run any better than simply removing the weather stripping? I am not arguing that vented hood will let hot air escape. I am saying that so long as your cooling system is working properly it won't matter. If you want to lower your intake temps for performance purposes then you should be ducting fresh cold air in towards the intake.

You should be happy that you dont have 6 inches of snow in your driveway, salt covered roads, 22 degree weather (in the sun at noon) and FD eating potholes.

Not to mention, when it comes right down to it, the stock hood really does look the best. All of the after-market hoods, simply ruin the beautiful lines of the FD. Some less than others, but still mess with the lines none the less.
