Found a great headlight bulb upgrade for the FD :)
I hit 150 way too often at night to have shitty headlights, so I've been on the lookout for something better than the "hyper whites" I've been running for over a year now.
I think I might have found something to tide me over until I go Phillips HIDs. Found them at advance auto--Sylvania Silverstar 9003ST, 25 bones per bulb. They claim 4000 degrees Kelvin, and the little guys are bright as heck. Very white light, and substantially more coverage than what I had.
No scientific data or pictures, but it was 50 dollars *well* spent. Those of you with stock bulbs and a penchant for speeding at night might want to check them out.

last night I bought the hella ff200s to use in place of the fog lights.
Hella has an interactive light tunnel online to let you see all kinds of things about the specific light you're looking for.
It lets you see the difference between halogens and xenon.. and not some shitty take a look at this stuff. the real deal
Ill let you know how the driving lights I bought work out. They look just like the 99 fog lights.

My HID's work a lot better than any bulb replacement I have seen. The beam pattern isnt that clean though, it kind of "bleeds" to the sides...and I lost my high beam since the bulbs are only lows Still one of the best upgrades I have done for the car though, it really imroves the lighting.
I have a before and after pic somewhere, let me try to find it

Excellent contribution Rich, I have been recently considering a bulb replacement.. the yellow light output by my stockers right now isn't cutting it for me. I will definitely give those Sylvania bulbs a shot for only $50.
I was curious if anyone else with a touring model FD has found good replacement bulbs for the foglights as well.. I suppose it would be nice to have matching light color as the headlights. I'll peruse the Sylvania site and see what I can find in the meantime.

Ok, back after doing a bit of research. It looks like Sylvania does not have a matching H3 line of bulbs to get for the foglights. The only company that does have matching H3 and H4 bulbs is PIAA, and their bulbs are a bit overpriced IMO. $45 each for one of their little H3 bulbs for the fogs..hmm.

If anyone is interested in trying these bulbs out, check with your local Advance Auto. I picked some up last week and they were running a special "buy one, get the second half off and a $10 mail-in rebate".

Hey guys, with the reduced price I would *really* recommend checking them out....they're not HIDs, but from what I've seen are the next best thing, and cost just a bit less .

how do these silvania lights compare with like "Pia Super Whites" or "Pia Super Plasma". I bought the silverstar 9003st, but i haven't opened it yet. I'm hoping someone can give me a comparison between the 2. Thanks

i installed the sylvanias tonite....they look better than stock....but i thought it would be brighter. Maybe its becuase my FD sits so low that the angle im looking at is too slanted where the beam isnt shining towards my eye. Too get a better look...i have to crouch pretty low, but in that viewpoint it looks a lot brigheter. I just wonder how PIAA's compare to the sylvanias. Thanks for the suggestions tho Goodfellla, much better than stock for sure. =)

Yes! Thanks GoodfellaFD3S..
I finally got around to getting mine installed last night (I'm still not into the new house, so I have to do things in the apartment garage.. sigh).
I didn't drive around last night with them, but just looking at the beams hitting the garage wall, they are much brighter. I'm going to drive around tonight and see how the beam pattern looks.
I really didn't mind the stock lighting, but I'm all for anything better.

My dad and a bunch of my buds are getting rid of their hyper white/blues in favor of the Sylvanias....

I was going to buy the PIAA Super Plasma GT H4 bulbs and the H3 Ion Crystal for the stock fog lamps. Has anyone tried these? There expensive compared to stock but cheap compared to HID. Does anyone have instructions on how to change the fog light bulbs?

just got some silverstars. I like them better than the piaas i replaced. the piaas had some yellowing and didnt seem to have as much distance. The only thing I cant figure out is that I was told my car took 9003. The old bulbs were h4..?? The autozone guy said there was no difference, just european number verses u.s. number...hmmm well no fire yet.

I went with PIAA's cause when I used cheap brand higher watt bulbs on the Honda they only lasted a few months and the PIAA's I replaced them with have been over a year. Not as bright as the higher watt but they are clear white (not yellow) and they still work.
For the Mazda I went with PIAA Super Plasma GT HID bulbs for the head light. The bulbs have a slight purple tint but not noticable when turned on. It is a pure white and much brighter than the ones on the Honda and a huge improvement over the yellowish stock ones.
For the fog lights I went with Ion Crystal (Amber). I was tempted to go with super white but with the rain and fog lately I thought this was the best choice. I can't jusdge the improvement untill I test drive on the road at night.

i have piaa super plasma bulbs right now, and they seem pretty good, not just dim and blue like those ricer bulbs out there. i might have to give the sylvania bulbs a try once mine finally burn out (been using the piaas for two and a half years now, no problems yet!).
if 9003=H4, does anyone know what is the european equivalent to H3? i might start looking for some silverstars in H3 size for the fog lights.
