FD Hood Vents: Need Help
#51
That's cool, different strokes for different folks. I did it like that to get adequate flowrate for my intercooler. Atihun's hood is "very nice", but those vents don't really do much as far as venting purposes goes. Mr. Hayes needs something that provide much more venting while being low profile at the same time.

Very true, but it was designed specifically to a stock engine/coolant package in mind. Mr. Hayes setup isn't exactly stock and he's probably looking for a 15-20+C drop.
Though, if he did employ that hood, but enlarged the openings, he may get the thermal extraction he's looking for.
Thank you on the hood

I also used to have Atihun's hood on my last FD. Workmanship and fitment was great.
However, I too am looking for more heat reduction capacity than Atihun's hood can provide.

I think the stealth look got thrown out with the fender flares in the rear and the monstrous wheel and tire combo. Get a Scoot style hood with the functional center vent and ductwork. That will decinately take some heat out from under the hood.

^ Probably. I really like the Scoot hood, it's just not for me. I've gone with a custom solution, much like the one I posted in this thread with the blonde draped over the hood.
The mesh will look like this, but will be powder coated black:
The vents will be "pressed" down into the hood and the mesh will be pressed into the vented from the bottom side up, hopefull giving the hood a very stock look.
Should be done in a week or so and I'll post pics when I have them.

I wish I had pics of the underside, but you may be able to find some from atihun's site, or you may be able to search the forum and come up with something. As you can see from my car, by choosing the fiberglass hood and painting it body color, it's very subtle, almost invisible.

Thank you. One thing I have noticed about most of the aftermarket hoods is that they employ some sort of raised surface in front of the opening. I'm no engineer, but I'm guessing it's to create a low pressure area over the vent so that heat is drawn out when the car is moving. I worry that with just a cutout you won't get the same effect. Other than that, I think it looks great. I know there are a few engineers on the forum who know airflow dynamics. Maybe they'll chime in.

The SCOOT and RE-Amemiya hoods are the most extreme hoods I have seen. FEED is the most stock looking one I have seen.
Alot of people wont approve, but you can remove the end parts of the rubber seal on your stock hood or washers (or drift hood kits) to pop up the *** end of your hood..... This of course is very stock looking as long as you dont go extreme with it..
EDIT**** I just noticed this thread is 3 pages so if this has been mentioned, my bad..

I have heard that the windshield is a high pressure area, so that venting that area does not allow heat to escape. There was a thread on the forum about it some time ago-maybe 2+ years.

^So I've decided to do something like the above (minus the girl unfortunately).
Gotham is going to custom cut two vents into my stock hood much like the ones in the pics. I've asked them to source a high quality mesh and then powder coat/paint it black to match the hood. The hood will also be repainted.
Total cost - $550 - 600.

Sounds like a great choice to me! I'd say the look is functional and low key and attractive. I'm still enamored with my cut-outs, but you couldn't exactly call them "low key". Can't wait to see pics of your finished product!

I'm no expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night... Air entering through the intercooler opening pressurizes the engine bay and is relieved through top vents. Even if this theory is bunk, heat still pours out when you're stopped at a light.

I'm sure the incline helps, but I haven't seen proof that it is needed. I have a vented hood without inclines and it stays cool under the hood at all speeds. That's proof to me that it works.
#67
what kind of reduction did you see versus no vents, in terms of degrees F or C?

Ferrari F50 ring a bell? The F50 had a cool little feature in the front. It had actual suction fans on the bottom of the nose to suck it down at low speeds so why not do the same except use the fans to suck out hot air?

^ I like that hood quite a bit. Seems like airflow would be okay too.
My progress: The vents have been cut into the hood and the hood has been primed:
By this weekend, the hood should be repainted and clear coated. The mesh inserts have been pressed (think a bowl with a thin lip - these will then press up into the hood for a stock look) and sent out for black powder coating so it should be wrapped up next week.

I wil be in FL mid mid month, maybe I will come by the shop for quotes... I kid I kid. Can't wait to see the car complete. I can't read that long thread of yours, I wait every two weeks to look at the pictures.
