FD Center Speaker Noise Question
I am installing a Sony CDX-MP70 into my 3rd gen Touring with Bose system. I got the adapter from Crutchfield, soldered and crimped the connectors, and hooked everything up but no sound. I called Crutchfield tech support and they said the light geen wire with black stripe had to be connected to the blue wire with white stripe so I did and it worked... for about 15 seconds. Now all I get is a bunch of static out of the center speaker.
I tried turning the 4 "pots" down on the adapter, then back up to 1/2, all the way full... nothing helps. Occasionally it will work better, almost really good, but not quite (still a little cracking and popping from the center speaker) but then it goes back to cracking and popping.
The OEM Bose was doing the same thing. I wanted a new unit anyway because the CD skipped a lot and wouldn't play MP-3's. My new one will, if I can get the speaker / amp? problem fixed.
All this noise happens whether or not the engine is running and regardless of whether or not the Sony is on a radio mode or MP3... whatever. When it occasionally sounds almost good it also doesn't matter whether or not the engine is running or what mode the Sony is in.
Do y'all think the amp to the center speaker is shot?
I appreciate the help. How do I check it? It looks hard to get to, if that's the problem anybody know what to take out to get to it?
Thanks a lot for any help, I'm stuck!

The Ctr Amp and/or speaker are bad. Pull out the amp and look at the circuit board on the back side - you will most likely find 1 or 2 burned spots. - I recomend replacing both the Amp and Speaker at the same time. ALPINE makes a speaker that will fit with a simple adapter mount. I can e-mail you a drawing of the mount if you want. I have one in my fd and it works fine. To get at the AMP remove the glovebox door ant the kick panel to the left of the Pass. footwell - the amp is right there. The speaker grill just snaps out and the speaker mounts from the top.

Thanks, Max, I will try to find the Alpine. Do you know where to get another amp? Should I go for a "stock" one from Mazda or does somebody make an alternate that would fit? I appreciate the info, I thought it must be the amp / speaker or both...
Oh, I just saw your edit. Anything you could send along would be a big help. Please send it to sanfordpeace@hotmail.com. I'm relieved to hear that I won't have to take out the whole dash! Thanks...

Could also be in the wiring. Check the speaker wire from the back of the head unit to the speaker with a multimeter, and make sure there is a constant connection.
