Yeah, those huge tachs scream rice! I see too many of them in rice rockets around my area. Even on automatics too.
Like mention 10X times before, the stock tach is fine. Besides, for city driving, real pros shift by engine sound. If I'm pulling hard, thats what the redline buzzer is for.

Personnaly, the additional big tach is kinda' rice, but if it's abilities are necessary for what it's used for, then fine. I've been actually thinking of getting a 60mm Defi link tach, just so all of the playback features of the other gauges make a little more sense. The only problem is, where to put it, I don't want to look rice with (2) tachs, but visibilty with the playback would be beneficial. Hmmm.

Would this be rice, with the additional tach in the large pod section on the left (60mm), with the other Defi Links in the (3) smaller ones (52mm) to the right? Or should I just hide the tach in the glove box until playback is desired.

Sorry, that was my response to the original question. When I got down this far I realized it was kind of ambiguous, and meant to edit but I forgot.
As it is, you have a large stock gauge available. So why would you want to take your eyes off the road, and focus on a smaller gauge to see the same info? OK. if it is for playback only, then I'd say keep it in the glove.
I would find something else to put in there, though it is kid of cool that the leftmost pod is larger.
I am not generically smacking on installing more gauges. Hell I have 2 defis in the center speaker, and a boost on the column. I will be running Water T., Oil T. and EGT on the pillar when I can get a hold of the Autometer full pillar pods...

The question is its function rather than it being ricey... The only reason to get that is if you plan to rev higher than the stock tach can read (i.e. 8500rpm+). I had to have one on my CRX because I shifted at almost 9K, and the stock tach doesn't go that high. If you get it just to "look" fast or want more gauges, I would say better off spending your money elsewhere. That's just me though

I think its rice at times and on different cars...but no matter what model car you have an rx7 is a sportscar and having an external tach is not rice. I for one have an apexi tach relocated in the dash (same size) .. I also put the stock tach back in for a while....the difference was sickening how much slower and unaccurate the stock tach was.

I never thought of it being rice. I believe the stock gauges are not the most accurate, especially after 20 years of aging.
I guess I am rice since I have a pillar pod and clear lenses too.
Damn, never thought in a million years would I be a ricer.

The stock one is mounted at center stage where it should be, and is more than adequate for the job. If you are doing it for looks, then rice away- but for functionality- leave it stock. Mazda knew what they were doing when they designed it. (imho, anyway.)
