It all depends on what quality you want.

My paint job was 3K and it was a ok job but i know a guy with a M3 that paid 6K.

Theres a lot of factors that comes in to play about the price of a paint job.

Also these prices were hook-up prices

Location plays a huge part in the pricing. With paint jobs, most of the cost is labor, not materials. i.e. in California, a cheap paint job is more expensive than it would be in the Midwest due to the cost of labor.

Shop around your area as the labor rates will be different. Paint jobs can range from $500 USD to $8000 USD depending on what you have done.

Paying $7k for mine. but actually probably less since they are installing the body kit, doing some molding, shaving some things, and fixed a few minor dings.

You're going to get a lot of varying rates, and this is why, location. I got my beautiful paint job done for $2.2k, and that's actually a little high for my area.

Try to get out of major metro areas for estimates if you're able to to go some distance for the work... craftsmanship in those areas, for anything, is expensive.

Just buy a cheap gun and go in to a paint booth and start practicing.
