Clipping??? HELP!!!
I just got a new stereo installed in my 93' RX-7. I got one 6 channel JL amp. I have Polk/Momo door component speakers. And a 10' sub (not sure of make).
At very high volume, heavy bass i am losing all sound for like a second then get sound for a second, then no sound. This continues until i turn down the volume.
I also have 2 cap's installed to try and gaurantee enough power.
Any ideas what would cause this to occur??

You lost sound from every speaker or just the sub?
Does it only happen with CD? CD could be skipping. If it happens with all sources it sounds like the amp is going into some sort of protection or you could have some sort of power problem at the amp.

if your signal is clipping the input of the power amp cut your gain down from the source to the amp. if the amp is cutting out you may be overloading the input and it's going into a safe mode or maybe even overloading the output (total ohm load/speaker wattage/whatever) and it's doing it. it takes more power to reproduce low end than high end so maybe the amp can't handle the high vol massive bass you're sending it.

A JL amp could run a single 10" sub all day at full volume without even breaking a sweat. I had amps that used to do that when I had a bad ground, would play fine at low volumes, but when I turned it up they would cut out and come back on every 5 seconds or so. If you had it installed at a shop I would take it back to them. If not, find out where the ground wire goes to and make sure it has a solid contact with bare metal. No paint, no carpet, no plastic in the way. Also with an amp that big you need large guage wires to keep the power flowing where it needs to. I would say 8 guage is probably too small, I would use 4 guage. The best way to check out the caps is to turn on everything electrical in your car and turn the stereo to your normal listening volume. Do this with the car running of course, and watch your voltage guage, if it drops when the subs hit then the caps are not working up to par.

That is the easiest way to notice too little power, but if your lights don't dim then it is probably something else. The next thing I would check is the ground, it may look ok but I would unbolt it and take a wire brush to the area it is attached to. After that i would say it has something to do with the signal from your radio, or your amp is overheating. Is it covered by anything or can air move freely around it?
