Soon my car is being repainted. My taillights are a bit faded looking seeing that we do have cars that are around 10 years old. I have this paranoia that the non-shiny look of the tails will stand out with the new paintjob, maybe I am just being **** though. Anyhow, I was wondering, think it would work to put a couple coats of clearcoat on them to bring out a luster? I'd wash them down good, let them dry, and then clear them with multiple coats.
Anyone see any problems with this? Will it eventually flake off in the cold weather when the car sits outside?

You can buy at your local auto store plastic polish. Its made to rid of scratches in the plastic and bring back the gloss. If you want a better job take them to a detail shop while they are off. they have the same products in a proffesional grade. They will make them new again.

Yep, take it to a professional detailer and have them machine buff your taillights. I've had this done, and they really do make them look brand new. They can even buff off the raised "DOT" lettering off your marker lights.
And forget the plastic polish they sell at the auto parts store. That's for soft plastics like plastic windows on a convertible top.

The detail shop is a better place to start off, but to maintain them after, buy the stuff at the store.
The stuff I am talking about is not for convertable top windows, it is for all hard clear plastic lenses. You can buy the good stuff like 3M, or the cheaper but still works, meguiars.
