Can't remove $#!? Bose tuner
I tried using the coat hanger trick to simulate the Bose stereo removal tool, and I can get both the CD player and tuner loose enough so they should come out, but it won't pull out all the way and I don't want to force it. Could the harness be caught behind the dash? Is there some special way to remove this thing?

Thanks, I'll try it again. Which unit should come out first, the CD player or the tuner? Or does it not matter?

Nothing is caught, work the coat hanger in as far back as it will go and pull it out hard it does come out sometimes they just get wedged in.

It doesnt matter, but do yourself a favor and buy the damn tool. Its like $5 and it will save you a LOT of aggrevation. You should be able to buy it at almost any audio shop.
It's tough to make a coat hanger work because the tool itself has a small little hook at the end that grabs onto the plates inside. Trust me, with the tool, it will take you LITERALLY 2 seconds to pull the unit out.

The Circuit City around me doesnt carry it. I know for a fact that a REAL audio store would carry them because that is where I bought them from.
Just open up your little local yellowpages, go to Automobile, then go to AUDIO, and start calling you lazy butt!!

Ended up getting mine at Kragen as well for 5 bucks and change. Finally managed to remove the head unit, but if I replace it with an aftermarket (Empeg player) will I need any kind of line converter? The Empeg player has line-level outputs. My understanding is that a line level converter would only be required if connecting a head unit with speaker level outputs. Can someone confirm this please before I blow my amp?

With the empeg, the rca outs that are on the pull out unit itself are 1 volt, meant to hook to your home stereo inputs. The one's you should use are the rca outs that are on the wiring harness on the sled itself, those are 4 volts, and you don't need any type of converter, just some nice quality rca cables to go from the unit to the inputs on the amp.
I've an empeg too, a 20 gig, and I've found the Empeg Forum to be very helpful, check out the empeg FAQ at the top of the forum for install help/tips
