anyone use an ipod in their FD?
If you aren't familiar with an ipod, it's a little portable hardrive/MP3 player that Mac has come out with for quite a while, and I have decided to try to use it in my car.
I am using the itrip thing to tap into the radio station and play wirelessly. works alright, but the thing is that I don't really want to use it this way, as I know a solid connection would work much better, cuz the radio frequency thingi cuts in and out and sound quality isn't great. A deck with an AUX port for the ipod would be the best way to do it IMO, unless you guys have a better way. I know companies are coming out with decks that have are ipod compatible.
I'm thinking of mounting the ipod in the spot where the useless ashtray is, only, I need to figure out some way to mount it. It fits really well surprisingly, just wanna keep it from jostling around, and I know a lot of you have done some custom type installation stuff, so any help or suggestions might spark an idea for some type of mounting bracket for it, and a plate to back it so it looks simple and clean.

I've got an ipod off of my alpine head unit right now, little discussion on it, see:

The ipod itself on mine is in the glovebox because you control everything through the head unit.

I too use my iPod with my Alpine headunit. It works awesome, but you have some cost involved with doing it. A base model headunit would be about $225. the adaptor is $99, then there is install costs. But worth evey penny!

i use the cassette adapter. The ipod stands up in the ash tray pretty easily. There are inputs on the back of the bose system for a cd changer that they had in europe...but to my knowledge no one has tried to splice into them for a true digital input for the ipod. If you splice into it and install a digital switch for the input signal (ipod/or cdplayer) it should work no prob

Does anyone else have any experience with wiring an aux input directly into their FD stereo. Based on the link listed above, it should work ok. I would like to do that to mine as I plan to get an Ipod in the near future and would like to run it through my bose system without the use of an FM adapter deal. Any other opinions or experiences on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm using an Aiwa with an AUX input and it works great! I've used the iTrip and it sucked but it was nice 'cause I didn't have an AUX input before. I think the Aiwa unit costed around $140USD at Crutchfield.com.

Thanks for the input on the aiwa. The only problem is that I still have my stock bose system. I wouldnt mind switching head units, because the bose is a bit quirky, but I have heard that you have to replace speakers, head unity, and everything at once with that system. It's a touring. If thats the case, I would prefer to keep the stock system. Anyone run an aux input through the stock bose?

I use an ipod in my car also. I used the itrip for a while but then i used the cassete adapter and noticed how much better it was than the radio signals because the aftermarket head unit that was put in sucks *** and the antennae was unplugged. Eventually i am going to get a alpine dvd screen with the ipod plug-in.

The least expensive Alpine that works with their Ipod interface is $199 at Crutchfield. It's actually pretty nice - tons of outputs and lots of features. It's on my To Buy list .
If you want to use an aftermarket head unit with the Bose system, do some reading. I believe you can just have the head unit's output going to the Bose amps, and you just have to wire 12v going to the amps to switch them on so the speakers work. That way you can do things in stages - head unit with stock speakers, later get speakers to replace the Bose setup, etc.
If our stock head unit has a connector for a CD changer or going to the CD player that's under the stock stereo, it should be pretty easy to wire that up as an aux input. Considering my car didn't come with a stock head unit, I've yet to see one in person, so this is theoretical .
