Anyone in the US heard of RDS
Stolen from Aiwa(UK)RDS-EON
RDS-MODELS
(Functions depend on the model)
At present, a lot of radio stations are transmitting simultaneously with normal sound signals so-called RDS codes containing various additional information.
RDS Functions:
-AF (Identical RDS transmitter with alternative frequencies): This is a list of alternative frequencies giving information about different radio stations broadcasting the same program in the same tuning range. So only the radio station with the strongest signal is saved. Receivers able to save the list in internal memory do need less time to change the radio station.
-Auto GEQ: The equalizer graph automatically fits to the style of music broadcasted by RDS stations.
-CT (Time): With the CT function a precise time signal can be received which automatically fits to different time zones and season-related time changes.
-EON Information (Enhanced Other Networks): EON Information are giving the receiver a reference in relation to other radio stations allowing to change from the actual to another RDS station.
-PS (Program Station): This is a name displayed in up to 8 alphanumerical characters, giving the listener information about the broadcasted program (in the display appears e.g. "NDR 2").
-PTY (Program type): Instead of changing a radio station PTY allows to choose a program out of 15 or more program types- TRAFFIC, NEWS, AFFAIRS (topical issues)- INFO (Information)- SPORT, EDUCATE, DRAMA, CULTURE, SCIENCE, VARIED, POP M.(usic)- ROCK M.(usic)- M.O.R.M. (Music on the road) - LIGHT M. (light classic music)- CLASSIC (classic music)- OTHER M.(usic)- ALARM
-RT (Radio Text): The radio text is a further development of the RDS system. On the display of the tuner appears the time and in addition to that information about the broadcasted program. Music titles, for instance, or the names of the performing artists can be displayed. Today?s radio stations offer this service very rarely because it´s a great deal hitting each piece of information manually. Unless CD producers save this information together with the music this service will be accepted.
-Traffic Program Identification (TP): This is a code informing the receiver that the radio station broadcasts traffic information regularly.
-Traffic Announcement Identification (TA): This is a code informing the receiver that the radio station is presently broadcasting important local traffic and travel information.
My previous boss here in TX had a new Volvo and the factory head unit did all this stuff. So far all I've found about it says it's only in GB. Anyone know what was up with my boss's stereo or is this available here now but nobody is putting out head units with it yet?

It depends on your region, but more than a few stations in SoCal use it.
I had an old Kenwood deck that had it. That was years ago.

Don't they make multi region head units? I know that UK radio is a different type of frequency somehow. If so, shouldn't you be able to pick up a UK unit with multi and RDS and if it's broadcasting local it should pick up. Neh?
