Oh as a portable device I like it very much, I love to listen to it with headphones, I have a pair of Grando SR-325 to listen to it. I just don't like how it sounds in the car, maybe it's the lack of a dedicated line-out instead of the headphone out.

Good reason to get the Alpine unit because it uses the connector on the bottom of the iPod, so you don't get any degration due to just using the headphone out.

My Alpine iPod adapter is a dream. It works seemlessly. The sound quality is better the disk, and having 3000 songs at your finger is quite nice.

Kinda same subject, this is the ipod setup that I made for my seadoo. It works really well and dosnt detract from the look of the ski very much.

I have used it over the last season, and it seems to work very well. No problems with the amp yet, it’s a marine one, but if I do I plan on sealing it in a box and watercooling it.

I can totally control the thing on the fly istead of just dealing with what is in a playlist by using the controller I integrated into the handlebar.

I'm loving the iPod adapter, once you get used to the navigation through artists/playlists/albums its really easy to use.

The only problem I've had is that while it is advertised to keep the iPod charged (and it will), when you shut off your car, or turn to the radio/cd, it only pauses the iPod, so that the iPod itself is still on. This usually doesn't cause a problem because at this point the iPod will have a charged battery, but if you turn your car off and leave it for a couple days when you come back the iPod will have been on pause the entire time and will have run out of battery. And while the adapter seems to be able to charge a partially charged iPod it cannot even recognize an iPod that doesn't have any power, so I have to take it out of my car and into the iPod power adapter to give it a charge for a few minutes before I can put it back into my car.

I'm not sure if this is how it's supposed to work, an oversight in design, or what. But for the most part it keeps enough of a charge this never causes a problem, I only noticed it the first time after like a week or so of using it.

Steve, I had the same problem yesterday. Took forever for it to recognize the iPod. It needs I would think 1/4 charge to do anything.

Where did you see info on the new iPods? I hope they're not a ton better, in the past 6 weeks I've had 3 iPod. I had my 3rd gen 20GB that I sold and got my Mini, then as soon as I got the adapter for my car I needed a 20GB again so I sold my Mini and got a 4th gen 20gb..

New Ipods -

http://www.apple.com/ipodphoto/

Yes, they're now in COLOR. You can load it up with all your digital camera pics, and use it like a portable photo album as well as play songs. It can also hook up to a TV to display pics. That is just dope! Mighty pricey, though.

BTW, I've got an old 2nd gen Ipod that I *LOVE*. It's just killer having ALL your music in one small place. I plan on getting a newer Ipod and the Alpine headunit and Ipod controller - man, that's gonna set me back, though . It will be worth it bigtime, though!

If you don't have an Ipod and want to save some serious cash, sign up for a 1 year subscription to Audible.com. It's an online audiobook resource - $20 a month, and you can pick out 2 audiobooks a month, download them, put them on an Ipod, burn them, etc. We've had an Audible subscription for 2 years or so and LOVE it. Anyhow, sign up for a year, you get $100 discount on any MP3 type audio player from Amazon. So, in theory, you could get a new Ipod for like $150. It's a win-win deal.

Do you need the newer Alpine head units, or will it work with the 2+ year old ones with Ai-net.

Supposedly, it's only compatible with the 2004 head units. But, on ipodlounge.com, I've seen reports of people using older head units that worked just fine.

If you're gonna be buying the Ipod adapter anyhow, buy it and try it with your head unit. If it works, awesome. If not, buy the new head unit and you're good to go.
