All Shift ***** Alike?
I removed the shift **** in my 88 TII to replace the boot, and in the procedd of trying to get the **** back straight I must have stripped the threads cause the thing will not tighten up.
Will a third gen shift know work in a second gen? Anyone gotta second gen shift **** for a TII???

Also, for your car (S4), the threads for the shifter are different from those of the 3rd gen (S6).
A remedy for this situation is to install a short shifter, but use a S5 shifter rod instead of the S4. That way, the 3rd gen shift **** will fit on the shifter.

If you want to go a cheaper route, you can probably use a shift **** that tightens with small allen screws instead of using threads.
I'm using the Sparco Techno:

It uses the allen screws to tighten down. Some people don't like those as they say the screws come loose. I've had my **** for about 2 years and it has never come loose so I don't mind it at all.

I had one of those sparco ones Mahjik's talking about. It uses the screws to clamp around the base of the shift lever. I had it on my civic back in the day, and the problem comes about with my DC short shifter which has a tapered neck. This causes the **** to eventaully rattle/vibrate up and become loose. I had to constantly re-tighten them every few weeks. Razo's were even worse unless you wrap tons of tape around the **** and jam it on.
I think the momo's are like the Sparco's as well
