Adding a "beep" to keyless entry - ideas?
Hey everyone -
Installed a keyless entry in my FD a few months back (DEI Boa, works GREAT). Right now it flashes the parking lights when arming/disarming, which is fine. But, I'd like to hear an external "beep" when arming/disarming the system.
I don't want to tie into the horn circuit, as beeping the horn is a bit obnoxious. I don't want one of the giant car stereo sirens under the hood, either. Basically I need a 12v "beeper" that's relatively small yet loud enough to be heard outside the car.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Dale

Thought about that, but I believe they have circuits that "pulse" the signal to the beeper. I'd hate to hack up something to remove that circuitry - not a good guarantee of a final product. Good idea, though!

Go to Radio Shack and buy a couple 12V piezo buzzers; they cost nothing.

The pezio buzzers are a good idea, but just about as annoying as the horn. The ones that beep on trucks when they back up don't have an internal relay, so it will just beep as long as it's getting electricity.

You can try to source whoever makes the beep device for Toyota (very pleasant, low key tone) and tie it in to the light flash lead from your alarm with a relay. Sorry I can't tell you who makes the beeper...you can even check around some wrecking yards for any late model toyotas to see if you can yank something there.

Do what DamonB says, but you will need more juice then what the pulses do. You will have to use a relay to get power to the sirens. What ever source is sending the power to flash the lights, us it as your trigger source on the relays. You will be golden then!

Yeah, I figured what to do for the wiring - that's no sweat. I just wanna find the "perfect" beeper . Not annoying, just clean and simple.
I may do some digging this afternoon on the ol' Internet too.
Anyone else have any ideas, keep 'em coming - thanks!

Go to www.digikey.com and request their latest catalog. It's as thick as a major metropolitan phone book and will have more friggin buzzers, beepers and other audible devices than you could ever dream of.

Dale is there not a faint beep when the factory alarm arms itself? If I remember correctly it sounds similar to the Acura alarm beep but not as loud. My car has been stored for the winter so long I can't remember. Maybe there is a way you can wire into this beep and possibly even amplify it. If you can please share you findings.

I find that the sounds of the door lock actuators working is loud enough for me to tell what is going on without having to look at the lights.

Hi Dale. Apologies for bumping an old thread. I'm looking to get the AdvancedKeyless entry system installed but have yet to decide on the actual actuator for the driver's side.
Was curious to know if you pulled the trigger on a JDM passenger side actuator or if you went with a simple aftermarket unit? I have a JDM unit available but not sure how it is installed. I'm thinking perhaps it will be easier to go the aftermarket route?
Thanks in advance for your feedback should you see this post. Ricke
