89 Convertible Upgrades

Hi, I posted this on the TeamFC3S forum, but would like to post it here to see what others might suggest.

I have an 89 Convertible with only 24,000 miles that was stolen. The radio was taken (as well as other things, but that's another story). The car was recovered and I am in the process of dumping lots of money into it to get it back into perfect stock condition - with the exception of the head unit. Since Mazda wanted $2000 for the radio and AE processor, I decided to just upgrade the entire sound system for around that much money.

I am planning on putting Infiniti Kappa 62.3 and 42.3 in the front doors/under dash locations respectively. I am going to get the Sony CDX-M620 head unit. My initial thought is just to drive the headrest speakers with the head unit and get a 5 channel amp to drive the front speakers and the subwoofer. Speaking of the subwoofer - this is a convertible and am going to mount the amp and sub under the spare tire cover right behind the seats.

Here are the questions I have:

1. Is it possible to replace the headrest speakers with 3.5" speakers?

2. Does the configuration above sound good to you? Should I drive the 6.5" and the 4.5" speakers with separate channels?

3. What amp would you recommend?

4. What sub would you recommend? Any suggestions on mounting a sub back there?

5. Does anyone know what the difference is between the Sony CDX-M620 and the 670 or 770 models? Substantial price difference, but no real info to be found on the functional differences.

Thanks in advance!

Dave

that sucks. going with an aftermarket system way is the way to go. nice to see more people from NJ. you should be able to replace all the speakers. i'm not a stereo guru so i will let other people answer the rest of your questions.

hey, i just put in a system into my 90 Vert and it actually sounds really good. I put a single 12 rockford w/ a rockford amp in a custom fiberglass box by the spare tire space. You can't even see the setup because it is covered by the cover in the back. I gave up on the headrest speakers BUT you can still put them in. There is two tweeters in each seat. You can replace them w/ regular tweeters and as long as you get a cross over and an amp they will work. Or you can go the route i went. I got 6.5 inch separates and cut holes in the door panels for the tweeters by the side mirrors w/ the them pointing up and i have a bridged amp running the 2 6.5inch subs and it sounds great i don't even need the headrest speakers. Hey maybe one day. hope this helps.
