88 vert stereo cd/cassette problem
Well i tried searching but couldn't find anything relevant to the problem that I'm having. I just picked up this vert and got it running fine but the stereo doesn't work right. The radio comes on but is very weak. Along with no sound coming from the headrest speakers. The cd and cassette player dont work but maybe I just don't know how to use them.
Also, the backlighting on the display doesn't come on so I have to use a light at night to see what station it's on.
Can anyone help me figure out what's wrong here?
Thanks

It just so happens that I'm working on a series 4 Clarion-made radio, full-logic cassette deck and EQ. There are some similarities, but I think the 88 Vert's headunit is made by Pioneer. But some things apply.
Pics and comments on my particular stereo are here.

The radio's LCD is backlit by a 12-volt bulb, as is the night time illumination, so it's likely the backlight is burned out.
The volume and tone control pots are likely dirty and need a few shots of contact cleaner. Finally, the tape and CD player likely use belts that have worn out or broken. So, you'll need to remove the headunit, dismantle the components, desolder the bulbs and replace them with new ones and replace the belts on the cassette and CD players. If you are familiar with electronics you can do it yourself, otherwise you'll need someone who can or a repair service.
Also, you need to check the wiring. You might also have bad amplifier(s). Refer to the body electrical section of the Factory Service Manual for troubleshooting and the Wiring Diagram section for the wire colors and component locations.

Thank you for that reply. I changed all the fuses in the back and only got the radio to come on. But I'll tear it down, replace the bulbs and resolder the bulbs and whatnot like you said. Now, I'm not sure where to find the belts that you mentioned.
Also, how do you switch between the components? It seems that the cassette and cd player just simply arent getting any power.
But thank you for your help, and yes, the vert is pioneer.

The design between the Clarion and Pioneer are different. In the Clarion, there's a lever switch that toggles between the cassette player and radio when you insert a cassette. It's probably similar on the Pioneer, you insert a cassette or CD and it toggles the radio; the audio from each component is on the same line-in to the preamp stage. Again, that's on the Clarion, the Pioneer may be similar, the FSM will give you a better idea.
As for finding the belts, I'm not 100% sure yet. pacparts.com may have the belts for the radio if you lookup by model number, but what you need may have been discontinued and no longer available. They have the small belt for the Clarion, but the long one is no longer available--so it's a shot in the dark.
The alternative is to dismantle the unit, take a picture of how the cassette player and CD belts are routed, remove the belts and measure them, then order replacements. http://ceitron.com has belts in various sizes, and instructions on how to measure a belt.
Sounds like the amps are not getting power or something else is going on. Run through the troubleshooting in the FSM.
