****Need Help! Dyeing a than carpet to black or finding a OEM Black carpet!***
Hello, My car is in the shop getting a complete interior redone [after an incident w/ a squirrel] Now I have found just about everything I need in black except for the Black Carpet.
I have searched and asked people on the part finder and everything and nothing!!
Im frustrated and Im just thinking about dyeing the carpet black while they take the dashboard and interiro apart.
My question is: HAS ANYBODY EVER DYIED A CARPET BEFORE??? What SHould I use and what are the best results! Any experience????
Or if anybody has a black carpet laying around please sell it to me ASAP.
Thanks
Saul V

Muzik,
I am in the same situation. I will bet getting my black leather seats from leatherseats.com so the only thing left tan in my 94 is the carpet. I have dyed my floor mats black with the same stuff I used for my doors and dash, its designed for fabric, carpet or vynle..
I found that with the floor mats, where your foot goes, the dye does come off after a few days and I need to reapply it. I have put alot of money in my car and as you know the carpet OEM is too much. Looking at it logically, your foot will be resting on the floor mat, not the carpet. It takes alot of rubbing and other pressure to take color off, so thats what I am going to do. Also, the factory carpet is so short and stiff, I don't think the dye will come off as easy as it did on the floor mats.
On the plus side, the floormats/carpet look OEM when you spray them black with the fabric paint.

Im really scared of Dyeing the carpet, I have no idea what to do. I have died my interior before that stupid squirrel decided to chew everything and it looked pretty good and no it didnt have a smell, only for the first week.
Im going to go ask Mr Spoiler in MAnassas VA, He showed me this past weekend a Probe with a MAd Body Kit and a crazy interior redone, he had died black with red and the stuff look OEM , NO Smell and Impossible to scratch. I DONT Think He will give me Their Shop Secret but if anything im just going to give it to them to turn it black for me, It will probably be cheaper than buying a MAzda OEM carpet or even a used one.

As far as me is concern, A squirrel had gotten inside my car through the sunroof. The sucker couldnt get out so she went nuts and started chewing on everything she could. Seats, Both Door Panels, trunk lid and a hole rack of ECU Wires behind the dashboard. I posted a tread for those who want to see pictures.
Anyhow, Insurance is paying for the damages and my interior will be OEM black now, and seats will be done by leatherseats.com
Will post pictures
See ya

Squirrel
That sucker, I hope you catch that squirrel and cage him for good.
On the other hand how did insurance categorize this kind of damage? Natural disaster? hehe.
Next time we all needed interior change let's all put a squirrel in there!!

Insurance actually took it well, I had no problems! they called it Animal Attack which I oly had to pay $100 for my liability and they paid for everything else, except for the seats because only the bottom pieces were damaged, They were going to recover the bottom with Than again, but I told them i wanted them in black and they said that I would have to pay half but the bill was $2000 so i told him just to send me a check for their half and that I would order the seats from Leatherseats.com and they agreed

Lets exchange before and after pics when we get our interiors done. I will install mine myself, it doesn't look bad. While the seats are out I will repaint my rear bins (everything else has been repainted... my car is a 94 so everything was black to begin with except the seats and carpet , lame!).

I wanted to revive this thread.
Zero Banger, how is the painted carpet holding up? If it's still doing well, I think I'll be doing this in the very near future with my carpet. The seats are in for re-upholstry, so why not, right.
Also, did you ever find a decent solution for painting the tan trim pieces for the seats?
Has anyone else followed suit and sprayed their carpet?

The carpet has held up, but it does require maintenance. I use very thin plastic floor mats, so after a while the area under where my feet are on the carpet (under the floor mat) wears through to the tan, so I find monthly i need to touch that area up. The rest of it is fine, occasionaly I may need to touch up part of the carpet. It works really well since factory carpet is expensive and used carpet is rare.
Just last week I picked up some black carpet off the forum and I am going to install it. I got the carpet for 125, so I could not pass it up. If I had it to do over, I would dye my carpet again. Snook followed suit and tried to dye his, he had some problems and sent me some PM's, I don't know if he resolved them. Ask him his experience.
OH yea...and you are not really "Painting" the carpet. its a spray dye.
