realistic haltech install time
For someone with expert automotive skills and quite a bit of electrical experience, how long would you think it would take to wire a E6X to a 13B-RE single turbo motor?
Im thinking it would take a day to do, how involved is making the harness?
I have zero experience with a haltech
Also if I have to towed to a shop to have it tuned, how much can I expect to pay for tuning? Im guessing 500 or so??

time...depends on how clean you want to make the harness. 1-3days; 3 days ( I work slow), meaning taking the time to lay out all wires with proper routing, and then tie them up in branches, eliminate redundancy, terminate, check continuity, wrap properly, install.
tuning - dyno time + tuner time...~$250 an hour (depends on shop and tuner.)

4-6 hours for the initial install, and maybe another 1 - 2 hours to make everything nice.
One full day to take care of the harness is doable.
I'd double those estimates for first timers.
I charge $500 for the initial tune that gets the car streetable and about 90%.
The other 10% can be extracted on a dyno...

E6X installation time.....
I would not rush with the harness.
I would double check the harness construction by "Beeping out" the connector pins to insure they go to the right wires.
Some people reported problems with this.
There have been several people with "Ignition Signal Problems" using the E6X.
I was one of them.
Haltech is aware of this, but cant seem to find the problem.
To me this seems like a noise issue that does not show up in their lab, but sometimes can show up in our cars.
I think (not sure about it) the majority of the problems were with the 2nd Gen CAS.
That is what I am using.
I think VERY CAREFUL Harnessing is necessary with the E6X.
Also - low battery voltage (as seen during cranking) is also a E6X "sensitivity"
I would route the CAS Pickup wires separately to avoid noise pick-up from high current pulses like is seen on the injector wires.
The CAS Pickup wires - in my opinion - should have an additional shield (copper braid) installed around the shielded cable coming from the E6X. The Shield should ONLY be terminated to ground (the Power Ground) near the E6X.
yes - It's creating a double shield.
I will also move mine so that it enters the engine compartment on the passanger side, over the engine behind the alternator and then to the CAS.
This path minimizes exposure to the ignition pulses.
I also highly recommend the E6X Power and Ground to go directly to the battery with as short a length as possible.
If your battery has top and side posts, and you use the top posts - run the E6X from the side posts. This can give you a few hunderd millivolts less drop to the E6X during cranking. (another apparent sensitivity)
I would run the injector wires separately.
I would also group all the sensor wires separately.
I would spend a few days on the wiring and not rush it - or you will need to do it again like me.
Also - about getting it tuned......
I suffered for months trying to do it and I seemed to be going in circles.
Then I got a "Innovate Motorsports LM-1 Wideband O2 sensor and meter"
THIS METER IS ESSENTIAL if you have an aftermarket FI System in your car.
It is about $500 but worth every penny!!!
That's what one or two dyno trips will cost you anyway.
And you don't want to be dependent on a dyno whenever you want to tweak something.
With the LM-1, the laptop and my wife in the passanger seat - and me driving and telling her what A/F ratio I wand at the various conditions...
You can reach the 90% "Correct Tuning Point" in 1 to 2 hours.
I have not gone to a dyno yet and my car runs great.
You need to go at it a little more cautiously because of the turbo, so it will take you longer.
But once you get the hang of it, you will be happy that you can tweak and troubleshoot things by yourself
Good Luck

The mystery of the prize.
I've installed a haltech in a few hours time, but I would not recommend it for a real install - this was done in a bind to get a car half across the country.
the most important thing that I've found with these installs is having a good quality crimp tool, get one speifically for the metripack and weatherpack connectors. It will cost a bit of money but it makes the installation go by so much faster, the good crimpers crimp both the conductor, insulator, and rubber seal in one shot. The quality of the end product will be much better also.

All new gauges,
New control and engine telemetry panel,

She is Even cool with that!!!
She actually likes helping me tune.
She is looking forward to when I do this to the 914..
I guess this is why I married her!!

I know one of her sisters likes cars... To call her a 10++ is an understatement!!!
36 years old, one very cute 18 year old daughter and she can seriously pass for a teenager..
A Genetic Masterpiece!!
But all her sisters are married.....
On a car note....
It soundl like you have a Turbo on your SE...
I would like to ask you a few questions about that...
Does it need to be a new thread??
I built a streetported 85 SE Engine that I planned to put in my 914..
Actually I want to put it in the RX-7 now (and the 914 will get a rebuilt 12A).
Everything that wears (except for the stationary gears and iron housings) is NEW.
So - I have stock rotor compression for that year.
How much boost do you run??
What is "Safe"?? (not that I'll really operate there)

My Haltech install is on day 4 or so now. But I have been EXTREMELY **** retentive about looming, using correct connectors (everything is Weathrpaked), soldering, etc.. I have documented almost every step of the way, in order to do a step by step sometime in the future.

My harness took a while, but it was my first time. Everything works properly, I don't have any problems.
I probably spent eight or ten hours total on it, but I did take my time and I was careful with everything.
