i mean yea your trying to find all the crap that was lost, but that doesnt mean you cant move forwards at the same time, you would have alot more people that will tell you for a fact if they want it or not if you gave us more info

Please realize something,
This is a group buy and product development INTEREST Thread.
Even so was the original thread that was deleted.

For the record: Production has NEVER stopped on this project with the old thread deleted or not. EVER since the beginning of the year.
I could have handles in all of your hands already if you want crap or if you wanted to pay an arm and a leg for it but FORTUNATELY for all of you I pride myself and my company in QUALITY at an AFFORDABLE price.

The ORIGINAL ESTIMATED cost for these handles were between $200 and $600 depending on the options people wanted making them affordable for everybody's budget. On the $200 side of the scale you might expect to drill and tap a hole in the bottom of the handle and drill out a few hole areas (basically a raw casting) and the $500-$600 side of the scale might be for those wanting carbon fiber wrapped or leather wrapped handles that might be embroidered with RX-7 or whatever.
PLEASE REALIZE that those are OLD ESTIMATES and as my manufacturing process change throughout this project they may go up and down just like anything else (do you want a Hyundai or a Lexus? or do you want a Lexus for the cost of the Hyundai?)

You should all be happy that I am IN FACT in the process of manufacturing these and not just gathering interest.

With that set aside The ETA could be as early as 2 weeks away from the first prototype (using the new manufacturing process) but the time that most of you might see this handle might be 2-5 months depending on what options are selected and how smooth the project progresses.

I Thank all of you with the trust and patience that you know I am constantly moving forward even though I don't update often. As things get close to order time I will have more time to communicate because all the pricing and timing will be figured out.

Soon I will give a more detailed post about EXACTLY what is going on with this project from start to finish.

Process Update
 

My original simple quick and easy manufacturing process that I was planning on using was called Sand Casting (see video:)

That is the prototype that you see in the pictures that I have posted.

As you probably see in the video sand casting is not the method I will be using because of the texture left by the sand grain and the pitting and there is what is known as "casting lines" which must be removed with grinding and sanding. Being that the part I am casting has dimples in it similar to a golf ball but more pronounced, the ground off casting lines will now have to be dimpled to replace the dimples that were lost in the casting/grinding process. I was using custom made center punches and dremel tool bits and even ball bearings glued onto a sheet with a hammer trying my best to replicate the original dimples. This was not working well and was way too time consuming which raises costs and does not yield a quality product.

I have Purchased a 3D Laser Scanner in order to Digitize the Door handle in order to use a computer to digitally remove the seam line produced by Mazda when they put the plastic dimple texture wrap around the handle for cosmetic purpose. I was unable to do this physically on the handle even though it is not viable when installed.

This Laser scan Produces what is known as “Point Clouds” or more literally points in 3D space and it can draw straight lines interconnecting the points creating what is known as a triangle mesh.

This is the most current point I am at during this project.

Next it will need to be whats known as reverse engineered which will set the X, Y, Z planes as well as find all shapes such as radius's, cylinders, circles, squares, cubes, holes, etc... This will create what is known as a FULL CAD MODEL. I will be using RapidForm technology

After I have a full cad model I will be able to do everything I need to get my end result products.

With the CAD model I can take care of the dimple replication across the seam line created by Mazda and make multiple variations of the cad model such as a slightly smaller diameter cylinder for those who want it powder-coated so that it will be the original size AFTER power-coating adds a little bit.
Also I can remove the dimples from the model and make the diameter even smaller for those that want carbon fiber wrapped or even smaller for leather wrapping.

The available COSMETIC options I will have for everybody are:

Plain
Paint (any color)
Bead blasting with or without clear coat
Polishing with or without clear coat
Plasti-Dip (to replicate 93 interior)
Powder-Coating (Many colors available but no custom colors)
Anodizing in various colors
Carbon Fiber wrap (Black only so far)
Leather Wraping with or with out embroidering (you supply the thread and the leather/Vinyl and FONT)

Then I will be making 3D prints (the exact method is undetermined) either out of ABS or WAX or resin/polymer or I may use steriolithogrophy apparatus or SLA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwQ5HA8sE-k)

Then the 3D door handle prints will be turned into aluminum by using a process called “Investment Casting” or “Lost Wax”

Then the handles will be detail by either myself or other experts for the processes that I cannot do myself such as annodizing or leather wrapping or embroidering.

Then they will be inspected by myself and then shipped out to you.

I hope this qualifies for a good enough update.

More accurate pricing will come when I find out all of the costs for all the options.

I know all of you who don't remember my original thread are probably wondering what the first 15 people on this interest list are talking about with all the options after their user name. I hope to clarify this now.

Sorry It has taken so long for all the details about everything but please understand my frustration that I have already typed all of this and more once before and now I am doing it again.

More details on the available options for you:

First I would like to explain that the DEFAULT OPTIONS for ALL handles (Except RAW option) INCLUDES Black Plasti-Dip coated in the RED area of the picture I have attached.
For those of you who don't know what Plasti-Dip is or how it looks or would look in the interior of FD's read this thread with pictures:

ALSO: As far as Color is concerned FLAT BLACK will be the DEFAULT color for everything unless otherwise specified and the Sheen will be FLAT.

Little note #1:
Plain or RAW aluminum will collect dirt and grease from peoples hands and would not clean off easy without bead-blasting. It would also over time would get darker in color turning dull to the look and possibly oxidize. With almost ANY coating it would prevent the above from happening and preserve it.

1.) RAW = This would be the most untouched form you could get, It would be directly as I would get them from the Casting company, It would be RAW aluminum and would need possible light dremel work if any, and MAY need the hole at the bottom Drilled and tapped out and helicoiled. RAW would not include ANY coatings of any kind and would not include any Plasti-Dip. This would be the cheapest option you would be able to get this handle for.

2.) PLAIN = This would be the same as RAW but would INCLUDE the detail work of the dremel if any, and would include a helicoiled hole at the bottom and this is the first of all the options that would start including the Plasti-Dip up top. But the remainder of the handle would be raw aluminum that is just as it came from the casting company (raw aluminum) This would be the second from cheapest option you would be able to get this handle for.

Little note #2:
Most the remainder of this list will be talking mainly about the dimple texture resembling a goofball's texture that is visible AFTER the handle is installed but NOT including the upper area circled in red in the picture below which would include Black Plasti-Dip.

3.) Paint (any color, any finish such as gloss, flat, satin etc.) = This would be mainly for those people who have a custom interior color or want it to be the same color as the exterior of their car or anything else custom, or even just plain spray paints that can be bought at a local hardware store (or as a cheaper alternative option to powder-coating) NOTE: you must provide the paint unless it is available at MY local hardware store in a spray paint can in which case I will buy the exact one that you tell me to.

4.) Bead blasting (with or without clear coat) = This would clean up and slightly shine the aluminum to a very clean but not high polish shine finish. Although It would sill be RAW aluminum and apply to "Little note #1" above. For NO ADDITIONAL charge you may include a clear coat after its been bead-blasted to preserve the look and finish. This would be slightly more than the above options.

Little note #3:
Clear coating will slightly darken the brightness of your ALUMINUM finish.

5.) Polishing (with or without clear coat) This would polish the visible part of the handle (the dimple area) to a mirror like shine. But would not polish inside of the individual dimples which would remain more like raw aluminum and would make a cool contrast. Although polished, It would sill be un-coated aluminum and would slightly apply to "Little note #1" above with the exceptions of cleaning would be easy (except in the dimples) and the polish would quickly (about once a month) dull and would need re-polishing ALL with the exception of: For NO ADDITIONAL charge you may include a clear coat after its been POLISHED to preserve the shine look and glassy finish. This option would be somewhat more expensive than the other above options due to the labor involved in polishing to a mirror like finish.

6.) Plasti-Dip (to replicate 93 interior) = This would be the option to choose to MOST CLOSELY RESEMBLE the factory handle. It would be your best option if you want a strong handle without being able to tell its aftermarket. (Plasti-Dip is also available in a few different colors other than black) This would cost the same as option #3 above.

7.) Powder-Coating (Many colors available but no custom colors) = This would be the option to choose if you want a DURABLE finish that will clean very easily and last a long time if not forever. Powder-coating for example is used everywhere such as your washer and dryer and many metal appliances around your house and garage. The colors will be from a list supplied by the company that will be doing the powder-coating for me. (I can provide swatches or pictures). This option by default will have the Plasti-Dip up top and powder-coat around the dimples but For NO ADDITIONAL charge you may choose to have the top powder-coated as well. This would cost close to option #5 above.

8.) Anodizing in various colors = This is an interesting option that I cannot easily describe. If you know what A/N Fittings look like up close then that would be red and blue anodizing. Do a Google image search for some pictures. Chrome plating may also be around this same price if you desire. I do not have an estimate of cost for this option yet until I get quotes from the appropriate companies.

9.) Carbon Fiber wrap (Black only so far) = This would be a REAL, SEAMLESS CARBON FIBER sleave around the aluminum handle. the carbon fiber will be trimmed at the red line in the below picture and Plasti-Dip will be in the up top area. This option is starting to get really pricey now and you can understand why.

10.) Leather Wrapping with or with out embroidering (you supply the thread and the leather/Vinyl and FONT) = This is the option of luxury because of how it would feel as well as being an excellent thermal insulator to keep your hand from grabbing a cold handle on a cold outdoor night but we all know how hot the steering wheel can get when left in the sun? That is also something to think about. You can use any leather or vinyl that you would supply and you would also have to supply the colored thread of your choice. You may also pick where you want the stitches to be (vertically). This option also has an embroidery option you can add in order to customize your handle with text or symbol like on a ball cap.
I already have the MAZDA font but you would have to provide anything custom.
See the picture of my FD's seats Headrest below. This option with or without the embroidery would be the most expensive option by far because of the cost to have a professional company stretch and wrap and stitch the material around the handle.

My most current update (info update from post #59 in this thread)

The scan data will be reverse engineered into whats known as a parametric CAD model and is currently being processed and will be done before one week from now (done before Friday Sep 11)

After The parametric cad model is finished then I will be posting it online for receiving quotes for whats known as prototyping in which they will ship me a physical handle that I can hold and test fit for errors. This prototype can be made many different ways that I have not decided on yet. It could be printed in ABS Plastic or it could be made using SLA (see post #59)

This could be as early as 2 weeks after I get the CAD model from the CAD engineer.

After I test fit the prototype and inspect it for any flaws or errors I will move forward or backwards one step. If the Prototype is not perfect then that would mean that the parametric cad model has an error that needs correcting, after the correcting has been done I will get another prototype made and inspect it again for errors until it is perfect. I will need to do this for each of the CAD models I will be getting for each of the options I will be offering for you. Below is a copy and paste of the description I required from the engineers that quoted me for this project:

I will need a few CAD models back.

1) A Verbatim CAD model of my scan with only one change: There is a seam-line on the back side of the handle running lengthwise through the dimple texture, I will need this to look like it was never there, For example I want the dimple texture to be uniform around the circumference. There is also a Female Threaded Hole in the bottom of the handle that will either need to be added or the center will be needed to be located and a dimple placed there for drilling later.

2) The Same as #1 above but the diameter of the Dimple texture area will need to be smaller for a Powder-Coating process later.

3) The Same as #2 above but for a spray on rubber coating using a product called Plasti-Dip and or spray paint and clear coat.

4) The same as #1 above but with NO dimples at all and the diameter of the center set to the correct size for Carbon Fiber sleeve with resin and clear coat

5) The same as #4 above with no dimples but with a diameter set to receive leather wrapping.

Then It will be cast and then I will need to finish the process to whatever is needed such as whatever coatings or sprays or finish. like carbon fiber or powdercoat or polish or leather wrap etc.

My engineer got delayed on the project for personal reasons but he is back up and working now and he sent me a rendered picture of his work of what it may look like in bead-blasted aluminum (see attached picture)

He says he should be done with the reverse engineering by the end of the week and then it will be submitted for quoting for one week or 2 and then I will start the manufacturing of the pre-final core parts and then when I get them in my hands I will apply the appropriate finish to them and ship them out.
