Carbon Fiber/Kevlar Scuff Plates With Rx7 Logo Project
Ok guys heres the deal. There was a post floating around a while back about these & I know it has been discussed in the past by a few people regarding the Carbon Fiber Scuff plates with the Rx-7 embossed logo on it that use to be sold by Speed Tactics & are no longer avail & I haven't been able to find anyone else that makes or carries them.
I've been in & around making fiberglass & carbon fiber parts for motorcycles for several yrs. I use to make Carbon Fiber & Carbon Kevlar solo seats for rare 2 stroke street bikes like RGV, NSR & TZR 250's because OEM solo seats for those bikes were hard enough to come by so I decided to start making them myself out of Carbon Fiber, then Carbon Kevlar because Kevlar comes in colors & people were requesting specific colors to match the color of their bikes. Its hard to find a nice un-scratched pair of SS scuff plates for the 7 as it is & I still think the Carbon fiber ones with the Rx-7 embossed were the best looking ones anyways. RE-Amemiya & Feed make a nice set but their plain without the Rx-7 logo & pricey, the ones they sell on ebay are generally crap & the quality of the material is low. I decided I wanted to make a set of Red Kevlar one's for my own 7, but obviously I had to make a mold 1st, So I will be able to make quantity, & decided I'm willing to start making them for the Rx-7 club community @ a fair price & they will be available in colors to match your car color (Which has never been done) & believe me when I tell you the colored Kevlar looks bad ***, much nicer then just plain black Carbon Fiber. I'm gauging interest & hoping to start a list of people that might possibly be interested in a set if I start making them. I would have got this ball rolling sooner cause the molds have been done for over 4 months now, but the cold weather made me decide to wait a bit till it warmed up a bit.
So if you are interested post up & let me know what color you may be interested in.
The price will be $190 shipped as long as your within the 50 states. Once I've completed my own set which should be within the next month I will post pictures of the final product on & off the car. Turn around time from the time of payment till you receive you scuff plates will be 1-2 weeks max. The holes will be predrilled & ready to install on your car. (Unless you want to install with double sided tape, let me know & I wont drill the holes) Each piece is triple layered by hand with 2x2 Twill & High Gloss Epoxy Resin. I don’t use clear coats over the Epoxy because clear can chip or scratch. If the Epoxy ever gets scratched, it can be buffed out.
Here's some pictures of the molds & pictures of the colors that will be available.

How do they actually hold up? The stock scuff plates do a pretty good job of holding up to and hiding the abuse they get, whereas the aluminum plates really show all the scratches and chips they receive.

Like to cut out say red Kevlar to put on the Rx7 part then Black carbon over everything else. When I try to cut out the Rx7 part because the pieces are so small they fall apart, the weave comes apart.
Unless I can find a way to do it another way I will have to stick to solid colors @ the moment.

They hold up pretty good, epoxy is pretty tough, but its still best to pay attention to how you get in & out of the car so your not purposely scuffing your feet on them each time you get in & out ..

I wanted to post some new pictures of the molds ..
I had some areas on the outer areas of the mold that I was concerned about that might cause mechanical lock when pulling the pieces out of the molds.
So I filled in all those areas & went over them with some more gel-coat.
So Im ready to start laying & Im hoping to complete a set over the weekend.

These look really good. I like how you did the RX-7 in the black carbon fiber. I may need to get a set of these in the red carbon/kevlar. Looking forward to more pictures once you have these finished.

No, not @ this point ..
These molds were made from the OEM Stainless door sills.
The demand on the Forum was for the sills with the Rx7 logo because Speed Tactics no longer makes them & they are hard to comeback in carbon with the Rx7 logo, so I decided to make my molds to cater to the majority.
If your looking for some good quality plain Carbon Fiber, without the logo you might wanna check out the RE-Amemiya & Feed versions..
They can be found here ..
RE-Amemiya

Feed

You could do the ebay ones, but they are made in China & are worthless ..
If your gonna spend your money @ least get something thats worthy ..
Good luck ..
