Runs great, Idles but sometimes while driving will die

I have an 1988 RX7 all stock NON Turbo that idles and starts right up, drives great, runs great but sometimes it will not idle. If driving and you come to a stop the car sometimes will die. It's a manual 5 speed so if you keep clutch in you can keep a little bit of the gas pedal going and keep it from stalling. Most of time it will just sit and idle fine. It's usually only when driving it that it will stall. Any ideas?

Does it die after braking hard or does it die after you stopped and the car is just standing there? If it dies after braking somewhat hard then look and see if the throttle linkage on the rear of the throttlebody comes into contact w/the white piston jutting out of the Dashpot below 3000 rpm (linkage pulls away from the Dashpot above 3000 rpm or so). And does the car just die while idling if the car is cold, warm or either way?

Car will idle cold or warm but on occasion it will die. I figure it has to be a sensor somewhere or fuel filter might be clogged a little.

while driving it is just when you let off the fuel sometimes and the rpm's come down. If you pull in driveway and hit gas it will typically idle fine. When I got car it had BAD gas in it. Drained it. Replaced plugs, put Sea Foam in and she fired right up. Runs great and doesn't smoke however she did the first time I fired it up because I replaced plugs and put some tranny fluid in to lube up things. Then I changed oil. It starts everytime, idles fine but will die sometimes when driving to a stop. don't think anything is rubbing at all.

Then check the Dashpot and adjust as needed for it's rather simple to do. The Dashpot prevents the secondary plates from closing too abruptly which can adversely affect the amount of air being pulled into the throttle's intake and thus causing it to gasp for more air. When this occurs the engine can die.

I'm RX7 Dumb but that does make alot of sense. Ill try this out and see how she turns out.

Ok, seems that you are too push in and it should go in slowly but come out fast. I think mine seems sticky coming out. Is this likely issue?

It should come in contact w/the linkage below 2700 to 3000 rpm. Above that and there should not be any contact. How quickly it rebounds from being depressed is a bit subjective. It should release freely but it doesn't spring out quickly.

My knowledge comes from reading posts and not really from hands on experience. My first car was a seven and I've held on to it since and its always been garaged and rarely has any problems so my experience w/these cars it rather limited. If your Dashpot is in need of adjustment it is rather rudimentary in nature as it has a locking nut which needs to be loosened and then it can be rotated either direction where one direction pulls it away from the throttle linkage while the other direction rotates it towards the linkage. You need someone to idle the car at close to 3000 rpm while you visually check to see how the piston is in relationship to the linkage and make an adjustment if necessary.

I put some Sea Foam in the gas tank and it now idles just fine. Did this the last time I put Sea Foam in. Think maybe some build up or Gunk might be the problem. Might change out the fuel filter as the car had bad gas that smelt like terpentine and looked like syrup. Drained it all and ran 1 tank gas through with 1 can sea foam. Seems to get better with the more it's run, driven. Crazy I guess...
