I would purchase a brush-on Hi-Temp paint. That way, you don't have to worry about taping things off.

Engine enamels are usually rated up to 500-600F. Exhaust and manifold enamels are usually rated around 1200-1600F. I while it can be overkill, I would recommend using the exhaust/manifold paint rather than just the engine paint.

It really depends if you have your motor apart or are you painting it in the car? And are you trying to paint the housings as well? Remember, aluminum isnt as easy to paint and you will need a primer if you do that. I always just use the basic parts store engine enamel aerosol. If your parts are good and clean you will never have flaking, prep work is more important than the paint you use.

I agree with painting by hand, but I still use high temp spray paint for most of it. After I get all the easy areas, I spray some of the high temp paint into it's cap, and use paintbrushes to do the rest.
