Neewb...
Hello.... I'm "oldeskewltoy", my current ride is a 1987 AE86 GTS. It has a number of mods from high compression pistons to Web cams, mildly ported head, KBD header, Fujitsubo exhaust, and a few other mods too. I've loaded a few photos of my car, but since this is my first post, I'm not entirely sure where it'll end up. For more photos here is my Yahell photos page
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/oldes...one=http%3a//pg.
Now for a bit about me..... I'm 45, live in Oregon, I've been an auto nut for more than 30 years, I've owned MANY cars... some even interesting - 2 Shelby Mustangs, a few Volvo 1800s, an Alfa Romeo GTV, a TVR Vixen S2, 2 AE86s(both GTS models), a 1970 428SCJ Mach 1.... and quite a few others.... as of yet no rotorys
Ok, some of you are looking at me and my current ride and are wondering why did this guy stop in here......
Well it is simple really... I'm looking at a mod for my AE86 and it comes direct from the NB Miata, use the AZ6 gearbox... But if it is a Miata trans why here??? I'm looking to swap in a 6 speed gear box into my Corolla. If you ever read R&T from Feb 1985, or can borrow one you'll read.....
Road & Track did a small performance car comparison road/track test. The GTS was the only rwd, it was up against; Dodge GLH, Civic S, Mitsu Mirage Turbo,VW GTI, and theRenault Encore GS. ANYWAY.... for the track portion of the test they ran at Willow Springs. On the track they ran Mitsu(1:55.00), AE86(1:55.35), GLH(1:55.53), GTI(1:55.80), Civic S(1:57.65), then Encore(1:59.05)
The Toyota was slightly slower, which doesn't mean slow. This is also a completely revised car and it also has a great engine in a good chassis.
But the gearing is wrong, and it hurts. Other things being equal, rear drive is more fun and more controllable than front drive. Rear-drive cars can be steered with wheel or throttle, that is at either end....
....The GTS was impressive in its full test and the expectation was the Toyota would win the track session.
But no. The GTS was a fraction of a second slower than the Mirage because there were times and places when the engine's power couldn't be used...
...It's just the jump from 2nd to 3rd is too wide and the jump from 4th to 5th isn't wide enough.
a 1/3 of a second slower and an obvious flaw
....because there were times and places when the engine's power couldn't be used... ...It's just the jump from 2nd to 3rd is too wide and the jump from 4th to 5th isn't wide enough.
Jump ahead 20 years.... (gearbox comparisons)
MX5 - 3.73, 2.265, 1.645, 1.265, 1.00, 0.843
T50 - ------, 3.587, 2.002, 1.384, 1.00, 0.861
Ok... that is all well and good, and VERY interesting... BUT why HERE.... Well, because of the fabbricator doing the work... I've been able to get Rob Golden (Pineapple Racing) to take on this task. I've heard only since I met him that he is an RX7 guru, and tuner extraoridnare!
Anyway since my little AE86 will soon have some Mazda technology in her, I thought I'd sign on and say Hi

Cool
I've heard of RX7guys putting Miata, Supra, etc, transmissions in their 7s, but never a Miata into a hachi. That's cool.
Although technically this would be general automotive or something else.
