SC Exhaust options

Hey, I just got this car and I am REALLY new to the whole rotary engine thing.

I just got the thing to run as of today, and imediatly I realized that the "3 inch drain pipe" is VERY inadiquit at silencing the rotary engine.

It has a real nice set of headers on it (Race Bent? They do look sharp), and I would obiously like to get a little performance out of the machine. HOWEVER, I don't wanna have to sacrifice my eardrums!

I would like the machine to be about as loud as a CB with a set of Kerkers on it, if that makes sense. Another words; I like loud... I just don't like LOUD.

I was thinking about a 4' glass pak pre-silencer and then a canister. But I cannot deside on a canister. There are a lot of "fartcans" out there and I don't like the look or the sound they produce. What do yall think? Flowmaster?

I have a 79 RX7 with a 13B in it...

Well with no sugestions I dug through my motorcycle scrap bin and found a couple of canisters.... REDNECKING IT UP!!!

And before everybody jumps down my throat... Yes the y portion is just tacked on there. But the canisters are most securly welded together.

So... you want to put a 4 FOOT glasspak on your exhaust, then feed that into dual 1" motorcycle pipes?

Are you retarded? Because that's how it's kinda looking from our side of the fence... I mean...

I supose I'm somewhat trolling

Kinda like I plan on blowing through my edlebrock carb when I deside to boost off of a Garret turbo... Yeah, that'll upset people that put holest turbos and megasquirts on these engines.

Yes, I want to make it quieter. This thing is WAY TOO LOUD. I'm thinking about a stock muffler and fabricating close to stock exhaust.

I still haven't heard any sugestions.

I'm guessing you are in SC. and I'm guessing you know Me and Justin. If not. I'm chris. PM me for rotary support and questions. parts blah blah. I'm the local tuner, builder ect.
As far as exhaust goes. if you want quiet with good flow and a boost in power there are only two options really in my opinion. The Racing beat Rev II exhaust. is my personal choice , but only because I can never find the Greddy Power Extreme dual exhaust. It's stupid hard to find. Any way , the Racing beat is the best option that's readily available. Yes it's kind of pricey, but they come up on the forum pretty regularly for around 500 or so. They are well worth the investment. you stay quiet until about 4K then it's very performance sounding. I'll attach some vids of both exhausts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTtVJKv3Dio

Fly by with the RB Rev II's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2wiTi_mXS8
This is a half bridge with the Greddy PE single and the last is the duals on stock ports. . the bridge isn't not really accurate sound wise since stock ports are much quieter. The exhaust is so rare even video's are hard to find. Finally. Rotary engines are loud by design. It's in the exhaust overlap. Wait until you hear one that's ported with free flowing exhaust scream by at 6K RPM . Your gonna love that.

I do like the RB exhaust, partly cause the car came with an RB header pipe. Does the RB exhaust work with the first generation RX7. It looks like the left canister would conflict with the gas tank.

Pacesetter exhausts are availible on Ebay pretty regular for about $300 shipped. But they're known to be louder than all get out.

I'm kinda digging on this "walker" exhaust. It looks like a good canister, and I could fill in the mid section of the car with a glass pack. I can weld up some adaptor plates and make it all bolt together.

Chris, use some of that "rotary support" knowledge and re-read his post. The Rev II and Greddy exhausts you're talking about won't work without hacking the systems up considering he said specifically that he has a '79 (that's a first gen, you know!)

OP, the RB header you have is a great piece. Definitely hang on to it. As for exhaust options, there are a lot of options. It seems like you have no problem welding for yourself, so you may be better off picking up a couple of good presilencers and going from there. I recently had my system fabbed up using a combination of what I already had and a few parts from Vibrant.

I ended up using a 3" in/out Vibrant presilencer to a 3" in/out Magnaflow resonator to a 2.5" y-pipe and then on to a 2.5" in/out Vibrant Ultra Quiet presilencer on each side. Granted, you won't need to make a Y-pipe to run duals like my sencond gen (FC), but it gives you an idea. The presilencers weren't that expensive overall, and I've had a number of people, both rotary and non-rotary, who thought it sounded pretty good. I will TRY to get a clip on my phone a little later today.

The 2.5" were about $85 each and the 3" was about $90. These were through Amazon, but you can find other vendors online.

Hope this helps!

( face palm) it was a long day Reese . I was half asleep when i saw the post. No idea why I thought this was in the second gen section . Guess the Fc is taking over my brain. But anyway, Reese is correct with everything he just said. Great guy too.

Man I do love that RB system's sound.

How much does that set you back? And where do I find one?

BUT untill I'm a rich (or lucky) man I'll have to make do with the cherry bomb I found behind my buddies house and a good sized muffler at lkq :P

Cherry bomb: (its a little beat but it still will work)

I'm new here, but I would think if he had that glass pack to close to the engine it would melt the packing. But I wonder if it wouldn't melt up, if he had it far enough away, like at the very end? If it isn't already trashed yet.

Man I got into this car so I'd spend money!!! :-P

As for the glass pack... Its far enough away from the merge on the headers that it shouldn't get roasted. The packing does eventually fall out, yes, but the divits in the metal inner tube really help the quieting (at least for what I am looking for). Really I'm just using it as a pre-silencer.

I figured out why my RX7 is SOOO loud. The PO didn't know how to weld properly and half of the header to muffeler exhaust is about to fall out!! :O

EDIT: after browsing the RB page I have found out that the PO spent most of the money on this soon to be car... I thought the intake looked professional. Aparently he paid well over a grand for the 4 barrel!!! Also, got a pretty nice accel ignition too.

All I need now is the complete RB suspension!! :-D
