Cleaning gas tank

My car has been sitting for 2 years now. Before i install a new motor i would like to know the best way to clean the inside of the tank. Last time i drove the car it had an almost empty fuel. Is there a specific procedure on cleaning the inside of the tank?..thanx

Also how do i clean the whole fuel system. Should i replace all the lines and all that stuff.

Hm.. I should do that too.. My car was sitting for about 2 years also.. I'm thinking I'll just pull the drain plug and the fuel pump... Then maybe spray the tank down from the fuel pump hole with a garden hose... Be sure to let it dry very well.. And leave the drain plug out for the water to empty...

Well I figure if fuel injector cleaner removes all that crud that builds up in the injectors then my guess is that it woud probably help in the tank too.

fuel tank

If the tank was left close to empty for two years I'd drop it and inspect it for rust and corrosion. Unfortunately it should have been stored full. Anyway if it looks ok clean it with carb cleaner and then go to a motorcycle dealer and get some gas tank conditioner coating. They sell a product that will coat the tank with a rust preventative.

Can i perform the inspection w/out dropping the tank?.. Do you happen to know the name of the rust preventive coating that they sell at motorcyle shops?

Gas Tank cleaning

The gas tank sealer is called Kreem, a liquid polymer . Before use, the a tank needs mechanical or sandblast cleaning to remove rust and a prep with MEK to remove all grease and oil. Then the tank must be rotated to coat all surfaces evenly with Kreem before drying by evaporation of solvent or tank will rust again, worse.
Easy with motorcycle tanks, not practical with car tank.
Best idea is to pull tank and get professional steam clean.

two years in southern california is not a big deal. pull the pump and visually look inside the tank and drain any residual gas. if there looks to be some rust pull the tank and have it hot tanked and repaired by a professional shop. Alot of radiator shops can do this for you. most likely the tank is clean. however I would never use a hose to clean the tank, no need to introduce any more water to the system
