13b 6prt weber carb hard cold start
ok i finally broke down and gonna ask for help . i have a 86 rx7 i have had for about 12 years was bone stock till bout 8 years ago. now its a full csp solo track prepped racecar i have been racing ever since. i rebuilt the motor bout 4 years ago with atkins internals its got a weber 48 dcoe 2brl carb and a mild street port. my question is my car is so hard to get running when its cold but when its warmed up it starts right up by just bumping the starter its been that way ever since i got rid of the e.f.i. need some suggestions, tired of burning up starters every 3 months during the race season. sorry for the long post.......thanks in advance

this also happens in the summer time heat too. To get her started a have to choke the carb, crank the hell out of it, and basically flood it to get her to start. the carb doesnt have a choke but i made a cap to simulate a choke. It just frustrates me sometime thats i have to go thru this all the time to be compete but theres no gaurantee it will start. I may just get rid of the carb and go with and I.T.B. but thats lots more money. suggestions please

a true choke does make life easier. i used my Dell'Orto on my 6-port for years and never had starting issues - in any weather. i drove through many New York winters and then moved to ****-hot Florida. in the summertime i could start the car without the choke and though it would idle really low until it got warm, it wouldn't die out.
anyway, the choice is yours. maybe you could try getting one with a choke first. it shouldn't be much money-wise by the time you sell yours.
on a side note, what idle jets are you running?

diabolical, i thought about either running a dellorto but i heard parts are hard to find but i may go with a 45dcoe its has a mechanical choke. I dont wanna get rid of this setup bc its was a gift. I have no idea what jets i have #'s scratched off.
89fc, what kind of jets are you running? this setup i have has always been a nightmare. I think its the tune nobody fools with carbs on rotaries here just
turbocharged monsters

perhaps all you need is to pull the thing apart and rebuild it with known parts. i'm not a HUGE fan of that wraparound-style manifold, but it can perform very well - especially for a street-driven car.

My REPU has the same setup, a stock 6-port motor with a Weber 48 DCO carb. Now that the motor is getting very low compression its a pain in the *** to start, it runs good but backfires alot now as well. When the motor was still tight it would fire up every time if I pumped it about 10 times then cranked. Winter time in Colorado I might have to do this twice but still rarely a problem. On the very coldest of mornings I would take a plastic grocery bag and wrap it around the filter as a choke, but that was quite rare.

i do the same thing you do when i have my k&n filter on it.
but when i have the velocity stack on it for autocrossing i use a radius arm bushings from a ford f150 and stick it in the stacks.
i checked compression on it its not that bad 90 front 110 rear. but even when i built it fresh it was still hard to start. and i burn up my starter doing it. what jets are you running?

i think i have my old Dell settings somewhere. i'll see if i can find them post what i had in my idle circuit. i'm tempted to say i was running 70s. i honestly don't know how closely they translate to sizes with the Weber DCO, but if it at all helps any, then you're welcome to them.

I dont remember the jets off the top of my head but I think the main jets are 200 with 180 air correctors. The idle jets I think were 45 or 50, but I would have to check. I am on a business trip so cannot verify until this weekend.
