RO 80 parts... too much is never enough!
For those who like old school rotaries...
A few weeks ago I was contacted by the man who sold me the Ro80 I have, and he said he wanted to sell his parts collection.
Back when I bought my car he had mentioned he had "some" parts and he would sell them some day. So when he e-mailed me the list I was very intrested.
The list seemed quite big, with many new (in original boxes) parts. But, also he had a second car. He prefered selling everything together.
I needed to think this over, since I didn't want another car, nor did I have a lot of money to spend
So I called him and talked about the car, trying to find out in what condition it was. I turned out it wasn't perfect, but complete. Most of all: it has fuchs wheels, my favourite blue cloth interior, and a 45.000km engine bought new after the first was killed. This means the engine is a very good one (given build date it must be one of the latest, and therefor best evolutions)
After headbreaking, sleepless nights, I decided to buy the lot.
The man told me there was "some" more than on the lists. When I arrived yesterday I filled up a Mazda E-series and had to leave a big lot!
Parts include: 2 engines (complete with carbs etc) used, but the have compression
4 gearboxes (making 7 boxes in my garage by now!)
Endless small parts, new spark plugs (very expensive, no longer made), points for the next 20 years, water pump, alternator, starter motor (all new). Many used parts (like three starter motors).
New light clusters (fog, front, rear), new body parts (sold out for ages), ...
Brand new carb, good used carb (making 6 carbs in total with the ones on the engines) brand new exhaust. New and used brake discs (again sold out for years).
It'll take ages for me to find out what is what and properly stock it. All together it'll mean my Ro80 will be as new when rebuild with these parts, and I'll have a life long set of spares.
Apart from the things on the photo's, I still have to pick up doors, hoods (I have two now, one brand new!), interiors, wheels,...
The car will be delivered in a few weeks. I've seen it yesterday, and it's not so good, with fenders rather rusted, but I'm not sure how the body itself is. If it's good enough to safe, I'll restore it and sell, otherway it'll be a parts donor. Interior, wheels and engine are going in my 73 car once the body is restored.
Pics don't do the parts justice, it's really a lot!
You have to be old-school rotary driver to realise the value of these parts, it's not like an RX-7 where you go to the dealer and buy what you need. More like the older ones, where nobody can supply you with anything, unless you can pay in gold. Only a bit over 37.000 Ro80's were build, and the end of the car was the end of the make NSU. The younest car is 29 years old, and many have been "recycled" already. So parts are rare!

nothing happened so far. We'll start this year, and I'm hoping for it to be ready in 2-3 years.
Since it needs to be concours condition, I'm going for a serious in-depth restoration.
we haven't done any work on it, because we had so many other things (garden, house, my fathers car, garage...) but this year will be Ro80 year!
I also got all the books, parts lists, information etc the man had collected in the last 2 decades. So work will be pleasant, and a lot easier then when I had to find everything out myself.

I just realised I do have a pic of the car on my pc.
The car is missing a few bits on the pics, but they are all there as part of the lot.
The second and third pic show some of the parts I still have to get. And even that's not complete. But at least you get an idea of most now

Yep, very nice. I have it on video somewhere on one of the tapes I bought from Audi tradition. In pure salesman way they made some 7-15 minute videotapes and sold them for 15€ each...
