Any TEC 3's

Does anybody have a TEC 3 and what are the pros and cons of this?? I'm thinking of buy it. I have a T-78, Pineapple large street port, ceramic apex seals, monster RE v-mount, etc. Any advise on which engine managment to go with. I dont see to many people with the TEC 3, why?

Even though I don't personally have the TEC3 in my car I'm a HUGE fan of it, you should contact AnthonyNYC he just got the TEC3 in his car and he's doing all the tuning by himself, learning as he goes, he also knows alot of people that have the TEC3 unit in their rx7s, try emailing him.

1) It's several hundred dollars more than a Microtech, Haltech, or Wolf EMS.
2) It will not run with a stock CAS, and requires the installation of a 60-2 wheel.
3) Electromotive is focused on the racing circuit rather than on the import street car crowd, so they don't get a lot of exposure in the popular import magazines that tout body kits and neon lights.

I just installed the Electromotive TEC3 in my 1993 Rx7. Before the TEC3 I had the Haltech E6K installed in my FD and loved it. Since I am very new to tuning the TEC3 I can only tell you what I've learned so far.

INSTALLATION
The installation is very simple. The TEC3 comes with it's own coil packs, factor this in since you do not have to purchase 3 MSDs and upgrade coils (if you do not like the stock FD ones, they worked fine for me when I had the haltech. I installed everything in one day, all wiring and mounting of coils etc. I like the fact that the sensor wires for the trigger wheel was shielded already as well.

STARTING THE CAR
Now here is where I was amazed. After you connect your laptop with the TEC3 software installed, it asks you to choose a bin file. You choose it and once you open it, there is a tuning wizard there. I inputted the size of my primary injectors (120lb) and the estimated hp (400HP) and choose that it was a rotary setup. I then cranked the car to check oil pressure on a newly rebuilt motor that was sitting for 2 years and to my amazement, the car started right up. I was shocked how easy it was to start the car with their tuning wizard.

TUNING THE CAR
Ok, since I was familiar with the haltech bars, I have to get used to the tecIII cells. The TEC 3 uses a 16x16 map, the TEC2 uses an 8x8 map. My plan here is to read the manual which is very good. I did and was able to tune the car enough to get a somewhat stable idle. I spoke to David Lane for about an hour and he really took the time to explain to me all the aspects of the TEC2, the TEC3 is different but I understood what I was reading after speaking to David. To tune your base map, you just need to input 2 numbers, once you input these numbers, you will see your base fuel map changing. You then have another map where you can add or minus fuel as needed to fine tune the setup.

There are also a number of forum members that are familiar with the tec III as well. Forcefed7, Ernie7 and Rotordee.

In my opinion, the installation and startup was easier than the haltech but with every possible map for a haltech on the internet nowadays, starting up should not be an issue. I loved my haltech and never had any issues with it, you are probably wondering why I changed?

When my car caught on fire, I had to rebuild but watch all my costs, I was building the car all over again. I got the TEC 3 at a good deal from Barry at BPR. It was cheaper than buying an E6K with the harness and 3 MSD coils.

At the time when I purchased the TEC3 Rotordee had also switched over from a haltech to a tec 3. This was a time when Haltech was having issues in the US as well.

I think you will see more rotaries running the TEC3 in the near future now that info is becoming more accessable. Electromotive states their ignition setup is the most accurate (or one of the most accurate) setups on the market today.

So far I like the electromotive but keep in mind that I liked my haltech as well. In the near future, I will post my progress.

Thanks for the info. I currently have the Haltech E6k, and I know of its limits. Yes it's proven, but it's time to step it up. I'm installing the new motor as we speak and figure now is the time to step it up. I have a friend that is using the TEC3 on his SRT, so I'm really used to it. I have made the decision to go with the TEC 3 and I know it will be worth the money spent. My HP rating that I'm looking at is 550WHP+, last motor was 400 WHP w/haltech. I'm looking forward to finishing my proect within a couple of weeks at the lastest.

I am currently removing my haltech and going w/the TEC 3r. From what I hear there are no issues at all, unlike halftech which was unpredictable.

Oh, and the TECIIIr adjusts automatically with atmosphearic conditons. Ideal to prevent sudden or extreme changed that could pop a motor.

I have finished my install project. And it really wasn't hard at all. She started right up. I did read up on the Wideband sensor imput, and I wired my wideband(AEM) to the TEC.......I got to say that I'm happy with the TEC so far adn cant wait to go further into the tuning......should start tomorrow....

Anthony what is your WHP you are at??

the newest version is the electromotive TEC3R. it is one of the most powerful ems's in the world. i installed the tec3r in a 2001 mazda miata i built a custom turbo kit for. tec3r with the direct fire units can go toe to toe with any ems out ther. i highly recomend it. its a little pricey but man do u get what u pay for.

Every major brand of EMS does that.

The TEC3R is somewhat comparable to the other flagship products from the mid-priced EMS manufactures like AEM, Haltech, Microtech, and Wolf. The higher-end EMS manufacturers dwarf the capabilities of the TEC3R. You pretty much get what you pay for. The question is whether or not it is worth paying for certain capabilities, and that can only be answered on an individual basis.

One nice feature I love about mine that comes in very handy with a Rx7 is my wideband was hard wired into my harness, thus allowing the Tec to keep a desired a/f ratio no matter what conditions or boost level. Yes it self tunes. (to an extent) You still need to plug the parameters in. Im very happy with it. The trigger wheel assembly that comes with it is top notch, timing is dead accurate, and the ignition is incrediible. They've done inhouse testing and claim to be the most powerful ignition on the market, even over the Motec. Don't if its true, but its still very nice. Im sure many more people will be switching over soon.

The Ignition system is a an inductive system with GM coils.
There's alot better ignition setups then that!

Actually I know Russ Turner who is one of the people who made the Tec 3 and the coils are not GM coils. Maybe earlier units, but not the Tec3. Anyhow I can't see GM coils being able to ignite 40lbs of boost, N20, and methonal.........cause thats what Demetrios did last year......so you tell me whats better??? Didn't think so.......

To help clear things up a little factory inductive type coils IE GM charge there coils with only 4 amps. Electromotive charge there's inductive coils with 9 amps. If you try to use a off the shelf inductive type coil it will fail.
