I still have my NA welded from my old NA car... I might throw it on my T2 for next year to see how it goes.

I can't imagine it being able to hold up for too long though.

They usually hold up fine until you start making power.

I'm shooting for barely over stock power... if I hit 200 wheel I'd be more than happy. Do you have any experience with them at that power level?

Nope, none of my welded diffs have seen over 85hp. It should be alright with 200hp as long as you weld it up solid.

A friend of mines had a welded na diff& halfshafts for 2 years daily driven with his rebuilt t2. He defnately had more than 200 whp , he killed s2ks . recently just parted out his whole car, and I checked the diff, there was small play with the halfshafts in the diff. i guess it was going to stripp out soon.

I think it should last a while. If it blows its not hard to find another open diff laying around lol

im running a welded NA with a Turbo drivetrain, including the driveshaft. what i did was exchange the T2 diff mount for the driveshaft, with an Na one. it takes a huge socket and a good impact. might need a puller too.


my bro is running a welded clutch type turbo diff. i have another T2 diff that forrest is going to weld for me. this time, though, he said he was going to gut most of the diff out, pretty much discard anything that can be thrown away, then weld it up.

cant complain for $25.

ill get sum pics during the process, who knows it could be pretty sick.

yeah a buddy of mine sold me a "conversion" driveshaft for $50. i threw it on and its like 2" to 3" shorter. i also had like 3 auto drive shafts at my house. any ways i didnt like how ghetto the auto driveshaft was, so i took off the turbo mount and threw it on the Na diff. its too easy to even consider using a short driveshaft.

good right up. i will say the welds dont look the best but its going to be fine if your not making alot of power. i used weldeds on my 240 and never broke it. my friend has a welded on his 240 and its make around 300wheel and he's been using it all season, it will be fine.

if your poor like me....welded diff FTW!!

its not like the welds will be nice when the parts u are welding have been sitting in 80w 90 gear oil for 20 years ..... its hard to get them clean to weld

update

just wanted to update this thread.

Eversince I had my diff welded, my NA motor blew as some of you might know, so I rebuilt my t2 and its in.. It has over 1700 miles on the fresh rebuild and I have been dailying since plus, I did 5 drift events at adams kart track in a row week after week.. I drove my car to the track and back home with no problems. The diff is holding up well, except for the diff mounts. I dont know how much hp I have, but My car kept up with a rb26 turbo s13 in the short straightaway at adams... so it must be decent hp lol So pretty much well over 2500 miles on this diff dailying and drifting.. I guess the shitty looking welds are stronger than they look.

Aparently so.

rotoracing, you can remove all that gear oil.

There are certain solvents you can soak parts in or just take the diff to your local machine shop to get cleaned b4 welding.

Me, i've had mine sitting in a bucket of purple power for roughly a month and a half now!

update

I thought my I blew my diff at the 626 event, turns out I snapped the drive side stubshaft.

so the diff has survived 6 drift events in a row, and over 3000 miles? The diff is still useable, just need to punch out the snapped stub.

luckily I have a backup welded diff.

The casing has abig hole in it .....



swapping the diff right now.. I have school tmrw, so I have to fix mycar before then!

yeahi had to get home, but I didnt have a portable drill at the moment to make new mounting points for the zipties.. so the quick tape technique works lol.yeah even my side skirt cracked in half when I was manjiing after the apexs.. I didnt even hit anything it just fell off my car and split in half LOL

got the new diff in.. It feels nice to be 2wd again rather than 1wd.. This time its alot quieter driving, I meshed the diff closer to the pinnion gear..I cleaned the whole diff assembly and rebuilt it.. I tightened up the exhaust and now I dont smell the fumes as bad and it runs quieter, so its coo coo.

Welded's work very well IMO. My buddies race car 7 has a welded diff thats gotten lauched on slicks at 10.8 every Wednesday and Friday for about the past 2 years. Still runs perfect. He's gone though about 4 different trannys on that diff now.

ive been running a welded diff for a while now with no major issues. the only problem is running the weaker nonturbo axles and stub shafts. when they break it sucks and they are getting hard to come by. ive welded quite a few diffs for people and havent had one fail yet. clean everything reallllly good and use lots of anti-spatter spray. then clean and flush a lot.

- now with my drifting becoming a little more seious and tandom compition being a regular thing, i need to upgarde to a 2-way or 1.5-way. - traction is soooo important.

lol yeah traction is important. I realized that after using 215s then jumping into 245s, so much better and faster, more control and more smoke... I think I could even use a 255 in the rear. A 1.5way would be a better choice for competition, you would be able to get more speed and traction. welded is just awesome to get by for budget.. NA diffs around here are easy to find and almost free everytime, so It doesnt bother me at all haha. Plus na diffs and halfshafts stubshaft combo is lighter rotating mass compared to a t2 diff halfshaft setup.. Get moar wheel spin with less rotating mass... but yeah if your getting serious I would jump to a 1.5 way.. Most d1 guys have 1.5way...

I dunno man. Perhaps its because I daily my car, and do super hard clutch kicks at events. I do have a ebay stage 3 clutch, and with the welded combo.. maybe thats why ??iono lol diffmount destroyed !

****, i should have brought mine to the shop today along with my open diffs. I'm so forgetful.....

Stage 3 ebay clutch is holding up? What did you get? Brand, puck #, ceramic or organic, sprung or unsprung....etc?

Because of the space between the spider gear housing and the side gears is soo great, you have to build up the weld, especially if you're using a mig welder.

It's plenty strong that way. DK already proved it and if my shimmed T2 lsd doesn't deliver i'll re-prove it.

Sweet ****. First one i welded took about 45 minutes b/c i haven't touched a welder since 2004. The second one took 25 minutes to weld up b/c i re-learned all my tricks on the first diff. **** is mad easy. I could do this for a living! I was going to gusset them but then thought it would be overkill for such a tiny diff with n/a power.
