Tires that smoke well?

Hey all.

I have been testing a bunch of tires trying to find one that smokes well, but I can't seem to find much of a pattern. I use 255 40 or 45 17s. I WAS buying hella old, hard but new, Fuzion ZRIs, and they would smoke HELLA at any pressure, but at the last event I bought 4 fresh brand new Fuzion ZRIs and they sucked. :/ They had noticeably less grip and they seemed to only smoke at the VERY end of the tires life. I tried 28, 35, and even 55 psi.

I have tried a pair of new NT05s, but they seems to soft or something because once they got hot they got super slippery, and caused a bunch of bubble/holes in the tire.

Next was some weird brand, EVO-Z tires. They lasted and gripped well, but didn't smoke well.

Tried some new Kumho Red smoke tires, but they literally fell apart after 3 laps. (I think because they were like 7 years old. )

Nexan N3000s (Smaller 225s 17) were useless in general. Was like ice skating. I am not sure because they were 225, or that they just sucked, but even on the street I had trouble just driving forward. :/

I am not too worried about tire life, just grip and smoke. Anybody have any other tires they have tried or any tips on making more smoke? I recently fixed my slight negative camber in the rear and was exspecting tons of traction and smoke but I ended up sad face. No reason we can't start some sort of mini tire database. If we already have a thread about this, let me know.

Thanks,
~Tweak

by watching formula d atlanta I would think Hankooks and falkens had the most smoke show.

All this aside I would think HP and tire size has to do a lot with smoke and grip.

anything with a softer compound. Toyo R1R's. Falken RT615k's. Hankook RS3's, etc.

the trick to tire smoke is your driving style though. deep angle + tons of wheel speed = smoke show with any tires pretty much. when the tires get hot they just burn..

Hmmmmm, I wonder that since now I am using ALL my tire instead of just mainly the inside, that the tire was unable to get hot? They seemed to have been lasting a lot longer than before, and that would make the tire only start to smoke towards the end of the 10 min session... hmmm..

This is what it was like for me last event:

but now, I definitely did not have the smoke show. Same 300+ hp and everything except the tires were fresh, and I have 0 rear camber. :/

Thanks for all the ideas guys, keep em coming.

you need spindles, and to be mad sidewards 24/7 just flooring it.

Already got spindles, it's like cheating.

That picture isn't anywhere close to full lock, but yeah, I got spindles. I don't normally use all of my spindles because I don't like drifting all slow though. This track is second gear and a lot of people go crazy angle and I end up catching up to them pretty quickly.

Here is a super boring in car video of this last event if you are interested in what a second gear track looks like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYK-1svFGxA

Here are some clips of me drifting at the one where I smoked well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxzGm12q6MM

I'm going to try some of the tires recommended above. I didn't change anything but rear camber and the fresh tires, and my smoke disappeared. It has to be the tires. ( I hope lol)

Thanks,
~Tweak

it also depends on the track layout and road surface.. Rougher surface usually eats up tires quicker and smoke up more.. Iv had shitty luck with smoke lately. SOme reason my car just doesnt want to smoke at all!!!!! idk why. I had more smoke when I was at 250whp with stock turbo.
idk the more power i make the less smoke. I DONT understand !!!!!!! Im hitting the revlimiter at 8500rpm all day, i dont get it.. maybe because i starited using new tires, i seem to smoke it up better with older tires..
this is with haltech, larger turbo, etc with nexens n3000

nexen's are hard to smoke. the newer the tire, the more it should smoke usually from my experiences. but still at the end of the day the more you're laying throttle full time, and not lifting the more any tire will smoke cause it gets hot.

you're not using the power to your advantage. all the videos i see of you (and dont take offense, im not trying to be a dick just stating what i see) you're either off throttle where you should be on it (to smoke) or you're shallow angle, letting your cars power push you forward, and not at full lock letting the power just burn your tires. you're bombing, and killing it, but the smoke happens when you're at deep angle, and laying throttle.

banging rev limit is cool, but you're maxing out the gear at that point, and "leveling off" your wheel speed. if you were to upshift 3rd it would create that extra 20-30mph wheel speed (at lock) making them smoke.

tires dont just smoke cause you're drifting. you have to make them.

if any of that didnt make sense, learn from the best, and watch the technique.

Yes, it really is, especially when you have a huge smoke trail behind you. Almost all the corners come back on themselves, so you can see if you are smoking or not pretty quick.

By far the best drifting track I have been on. PacificGP.com.

dunlop dz101s make crazy smoke

but it depends how you drive. if you dont hammer down you won't get alot of smoke, it won' matter what tire brand

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9fg3YeMwP4

i've used some random tires like sumitomo's, etc and they worked decent but when they got they will fall apart and delaminate....if you are making smoke the tire is HOT

ive figured it out.. I noticed Ive been drifting alot shallower this year. I think because ever since round 1 xdc, having the lowest hp car, made me drive really shallow to keep up with the v8 guysp and 400+whp ppls. Also I havent been using my angle at all, I need to get back to that for sure. I know in 08-09 I was alway lock to lock transitions [example in my sig pic] and I only had barely 200whp and I made my smoke come to my doors and mirrors with any tire..

As mentioned before, if you have a lot of power = lot of smoke.
If you don't, you need to be violent with your car, throwing it without respect, then flooring it to keep it up / avoid spins ... this is waaaay more funny !

Don't be shy, never lift. If you have to brake use your left foot as much as possible.

The FD is the first car I have that smokes as soon as I clutch kick it ... not fun ^^
