Manual rack vs power steering
#28
It's is true that you do feel the ground and lot more and it's a little hard to steer sitting still. but it's not that bad, I like it, feels good. Now as far as drifting I want power steering, because after a while maybe 10 minutes of drifting your arms are going to be so tired, plus car reaction is going to be late as well. So that's a nice way of putting it.

Yeah. I found out after a TON of searching and posting here where I learned from all the self proclaimed rx7 experts and ******** old dudes that swapping power steering into a car that did not have the PS computer in the harness already (ie into a non ps model) was "not possible".
Meanwhile I asked this awesome RX7 mechanic who used to be in colorado what he thought i should do, Actually i think i asked him if he had a full chassis harness I could buy to swap into my car and his response was: "Huh!? You dont need the PS computer you can just set the pup to a level that works for you and be good, all you lose is the computer controlled variability at speed".
The lesson learned is that 99% of the people on here who jerk off to their own sense of knowledge (REted etc) have no clue about anything when it comes down to it.
Essentially the computer just controlls a motor that alters the pumps feedback. (the PS pump plugs this motor into the harness) you just take off the cover of the little motor, use a holesaw to make an opening in it, and adjust the screw manually until you find a position that gives you the feel you like.

When it comes to flannel shirts, there is no INAPPROPRIATE social situation. Because as a man with a flannel shirt on, you just don't give a **** about "yuppies, and businessmen" and if they think you are appropriately dressed... 'cause they are pussies.

Learning how to drift with manual steering sucks. but I'm better for it. I went from doing donuts to hitting a 1/4 mile oval banked track at 50-60mph (and still too slow to keep my STOCK na in the middle of the track). Builds up your arm muscles though, especially when you end up spinning out and are trying to hold the wheel to steer. I had whiplash for a week after that endeaver. best time I've had in a car.lol. This year we finally get large parking lots and coned courses, use to be e-town was closest place not banked and legal up in my area. e-towns 7 hours drive though

Odd thing about P/S vs. Non P/S is that unless you have modified the stock P/S system for one or more of it's shortcomings, you really haven't seen what it can do with some work. Drifting might benefit from a faster rack. Move the steering arms around a bit. And I heard it has issues with a toe curve at extension?
I grew up off-road with a manual rack and got used to it. When we went to P/S, the feel went away but I adjusted.
"Nothing like a really nice rack."

My car has a manual rack. It's not retarded, just different. It kinda sucks on bumpy tracks, and driving around the pits, but other then that it's ok. I pretty much learned to drive with it, I like it, whatever. One less thing to worry about I guess. I have modded knuckles, low offset, wide front tires (235), and a lot of camber too. I'm also skinny.
My car is quite a bit lighter then stock though too.
If your car already has powersteering, taking it off for appearances probably isn't a great idea. I removed mine because my rack took a ****, and I wasn't into drifting yet.

^one less thing to worry about is right. I say stay with whatever you have and get used to it. why do the extra work?
I personally think that upgrading the steering ratio to something faster on any car that is pure drift built would be a good idea for competition maybe. makes you that much faster in situations when you need to transition or alter your line a bit. as long as you can keep it sideways then I say run it and have fun. I go back and forth drifting my '00 impreza 2.5rs on the dirt roads here and my 7. awd and power steering are a hell of a lot different then rwd and no pwr steering obviously. after the first turn I am used to the difference and can go all out in either car. and the impreza is my auto daily.lol

ps really helps take the blunt force out of the road, i.e. bumpsteer and whatever... and helps keep the wheel stiff at high speeds.
manual rack is sensitive. it has feelings like a dumb *** bitch

Wow good info here thanks guys! Yeah I am going to do what CJ did because I have a manual rack equipped car and just acquired a full PS setup and was wondering what I would do with the PS computer..
Thanks CJ!

I had a blocked off PS rack (non gutted since that takes a good 8 hours and a lot of patience) and I wasn't a fan. It was kinda hard to turn, but that wasn't the huge problem. It's too damn sensitive to not have power assist. I depowered it originally to make room for my intercooler piping.
Just swapped in a manual rack and WOW. It's so easy to turn now, the car feels solid around corners, I love it! And it's not that sluggish since I can turn the wheel pretty fast.
Btw Funkjaws a weenie :P

i said fck it and depowered the bitch feels good not a pain like alot of you make it sound low speed takes some force but above 10 mph its kool, im still goin to try and find a manny rack just for comparison
