Parts Transport section
On another forum I'm on, there is a section to request or advertise availability of a parts transport...
Shipping engines, transmissions, and the like is expensive. If I knew someone was going on a road trip near to the destination, it'd be nice to ask if they could transport a part.
It should be up to the transporter, the sender, and receiver as to how the transport is to go. Perhaps put it in the classified section.
Example posts:
Subject:
OFFER: Washington D.C. to Christiansburg, VA
Post:
I'm driving down to visit my girlfriend at school (Va Tech). I'll have a small SUV and the cargo area will be empty.
Subject:
REQUEST: Pittsburgh, PA to Morristown, TN
Post:
My engine blew up and I need to send it to Kevin Landers. Is anyone going down that way? The engine is stripped of manifolds and it's just the bare shortblock. I can provide a tire to put it on if needed.

great suggestion, risky, but if the right precaustion were taken it would be very safe. ie driver's lis., license plate #'s adresses of all partys verified ect.
this would be a awesome way to stay on a buget and keep cost low and help[ build loyalty and integrety to the site and any partys envolved

As a transporter, I'd have rules.
I will NOT handle cash for this deal. (Unless it's for my fuel.)
**** will be SECURELY tied down if it's large and/or heavy, IE drivetrain components. Otherwise, you pack it.
I will have cell phone numbers of both parties involved before the part is loaded into my vehicle.
Meeting points will be discussed with all three parties prior to my leaving the origin point.
I'll think of more later... But those should take care of most problems.

Just use www.uship.com instead.
The transporters are bonded and insured and there is an great feedback system in place.

We (staff) just don't want to deal with another section dedicated to this type of thing. We have enough troubles with people getting scammed and not getting parts in a timely manner. This would just add more problems.

The first response was a reasonable response, the second was taking a dig at the staff. You know how far we've come since the wild nearly unmonitored days of classifieds, your spitting on our shoes with the " do anything crazy like moderating or administrating the website" that comment was just uncalled for.
If we can ever get the owners to install an accurate trader rating software like iTrader or something equivalent it's feasible but right now it's not something that we could easily implement and monitor. The last thing we need is for someone to lose, damage or steal items without any recourse. Transporters at uship.com must submit to being registered with the website, not simply making up a username and offering to take your parts and drive of down the road with them.
My uship.com response was only made to further the discussion and inspire the full and well-thought out implementation of such an idea. It was not meant to end the subject.
My point of posting about uship was that the transporters there are typically insured and bonded, they are reviewed by the shippers and have feedback posted in an orderly fashion about them.
However if you take a moment to check out uship you will notice though most of these friendly transporters wind up being professional shippers which would present us with another problem. That is that that people offering a "friendly" service might end up making a small business out of it or even more likely we would just end up attracting professional hot shot drivers to infiltrate our forums only to cull new business from them.
These are some of the issues we have to address before just throwing up a new section. So before you get all haughty and bothered by the response that it's not something we are interested in doing at this time consider some of the other variables and issues that the creation of such a section might bring down the line.

I did not see your uship.com response as being an attempt to further the discussion, saying "just use this other website instead" rather than the conversation inspiring "I like the way this website is setup, perhaps we could farm it for ideas". I don't see any reason that a staff member, let alone two staff members, should come off as dismissing any idea right off the bat. That's what us regular members are for
I certainly feel you on needing a quality reputation tracker, such as iTrader. This site would definitely be better for it. And it may be required before implementing a forum for third parties to become involved in transactions.

I'm not sure how well it works. I am going to transport something next time I go to my girlfriend's house, the seller lives near me...
That site is a LOT smaller than this one though.
In addition, how would the RX-7 club be liable for loss? Are you liable if I send money to someone and they don't ship the goods or ship faulty goods?
I think it's buyer beware and protect your own self in buying items in the classified section; as it should be in the parts transport section.

It is buyer beware Pele, but some members feel that we are liable for spotting scammers before it happens that the member sells items or a car. We can only lead the 'horse' to the water, we can't make them drink it.
If something like this were to happen, I think it would get the most exposure and best results in the regional sections. Just don't expect anything like this to get started up within a few weeks. If the Staff did consider doing something like this, it would take many months to get started up. I am not saying we are considering it right now, it's probably the furthest thing from the entire Staff's mind right now. We are still trying to get iTrader started up here.

Not dealing with people with low post counts, paying via credit card AND through PayPal, and getting a good communications line via PM, eMail, and/or telephone are good things to keep in mind. I'd think anyone who deals with this stuff would know that, and you still have to remember that sometimes you'll STILL get scammed.
I guess it's true what they say about fools and money.

or the shipper can pay the seller for the part and the buyer will then pay the shipper, that way the shipper now owns the part and if he doesn't deliver the buyer isn't out anything..
can be handled via paypal, COD, money order.. whatever they choose, I think its a good idea, and if brian thinks you guys don't moderate, make the section and make HIM moderate it so he can see just how 'easy' your job is...
