WHY they call it a "THROW OUT Bearing"!

I surmised after changing the Hydraulics that I still had a clutch issue.
The car's clutch pedal just felt Funky..Like it was sticking on Metal.
so I decide to go ahead and drop the transmission..in my Driveway,,IN Winter.
This is what I found.
I THINK that the throw out bearing can Literally be Thrown out!

A A well used THRUST brg ends up to be a THROWOUT brg

Hey Dave hope every thing is going well for you .. I know you are just kidding but lets see where this goes.. A throw out bearing belongs to a very specific subset of bearings, the first of these being a spherical (or rolling element) bearing. This type of bearing is designed to govern circular movements. The aim of spherical bearings is to allow a constant and relative rolling motion that rolls easily without sliding. Bearings in general have existed for a very long time; the earliest known spherical bearing was developed around 40 B.C. There are a number of types of spherical, the most recognizable of these being the ball bearing, which literally contains ***** inside of it. Most other spherical bearing use cylinders in the same role; the ball bearing is designed for lighter loads only.

The throw out bearing is a thrust bearing. This is a further subset of spherical bearings that is designed to hold heavier loads – such as the pressure exerted by the clutch in a car. Thrust bearing are used in all types of electronic vehicles, whether they be cars or ships or space vehicles. The throw out bearing is a specific kind of thrust bearing that is used in a car’s clutch. As said earlier, thrust bearings are used to support heavy loads, and the throw out bearing can come under strong pressure, as one of the things it does is absorb the friction created by the pressure plate and the release fork in the clutch.

You’ll notice a problem with the throw out bearing immediately, as you’ll both feel and hear it when shifting. Also, if you’re changing your clutch, you’ll definitely want to change the throw out bearing as well, as this will help avoid any problems with installation. That isn’t a very hard job to do at home, assuming you have some degree of car literacy. If you do end up having problems with your throw out bearings, it’s important to change them immediately, or the lack of aid your clutch receives from the bearing can have a chain reaction of causing damage to the rest of the clutch system.
You must be as bored as I am .. changing a trans in the drive way in winter I think fits right in there with removing a drive shaft in the back yard at -26 with a 20 km breeze ..Shoveling the snow back and getting the darn thing jacked up and blocked was the worst once I got underneath and got working it was just like Hawaii under there .. buy the time I got out from under the car I'm not sure what that was froze on my face but I know it wasn't frost .. You sure got your moneys worth out of that brg It must have been a tad dry..

thrust bearings

congrats at confirmation of your intuition and the discover of your solution.
once your car can be allowed to roam free with no worries, the busted knuckles seem trivial.

Gerald,I couldn't diagnose the Clutch and be "bang on" as the car was not Runnable when I got it.
The Fubarred clutch would not allow the car to Start up as it wouldn't hit the Safety interlock, and allow it to do so.
I Bypassed that to get the engine started( after it sat for 2 years) and I found out more of what the car needed after that.
But My Biggest Challenge was to Find out WHY the Clutch would not engage Correctly after buying all new hydraulics.
I assumed a Bad Bearing, catching the TINES on the Pressure plate..and it was "official" when I finally got to Pull the Transmission off the car today.
So That is another step closer to getting Old "Betty White" back on the Road..(white 88 vert)
I should have invested in a "pop up" garage for the winter,But I had unforeseen expenses and that never happened.
I hate Winter, but It isn't gonna stop me IF I wanna do ****,I make it Happen!.somehow..haha!
cheers Styx!~

I know just what you mean Dave . I agree I am dammed if I will wait till spring to do things that are heavy on my mind . It always seems like a bitch when one is out doing those kinda things but after all is said and done and your sitting thinking about it , the first thing that comes to mind is OH IT WASN'T THAT BAD. Last winter I horded in my handi bus with some 2x4's and insulated tarps to do some work on it ..( I have my 20,000 watt generator in it for running my spray foam rig, work bench etc. ) the wind came along and blew the dam thing into my not so nice neighbors yard and busted a little bush . He phoned the cops, when they came to my house and told me that he had phoned them that I had ruined his trees they were quite concerned until I told them what happened they had a pretty good laugh .. They even helped me drag the darn thing home , what was left of it anyway.. WINTER SUCKS AND SO DOES THE WIND.. I was suppose to pay him for the bush but that just ain't going to happen. He can put his bush where the sun don't shine ..

For sure Syritis It's a dam good thing that it doesn't cost money to grow skin or 99% of the guys on this forum would be flat broke we wouldn't have a pot to **** in never mind a window to throw it out of. But you know all joking aside when I pulled the engine, trans and diff out of my one parts R7 things came apart very easy once the nuts and bolts were loose .. They must have used good quality stuff to hold these little cars together .. And buy the way Dave you wouldn't want my neighbor's wife's bush she looks like the north end of a horse going south .. I would sooner scrap with him than her , Might get a black eye from him but she would hurt ya. Guess which way my bike will be pointing when I do my first burn out . Yup
