Hi guys I 've got "kicked out" by Unifound Assurance Company because of RHD.
How do I find which companies have a filed rule against insuring Right Hand Drive cars? I have over 20 years of driving, clean record, no other drivers and have daily for winter driving. Just want to drive ocassionally my rhd for 5 months a year.

Help me find insurance for my cars that'll not discriminate me, please!

I have written down a very easy to follow guideline on how to get insurance on a RHD car, if you're not willing to do it, or you feel that it's too tough, that's not my problem.

How do you think *I* got insurance on my car? I can't call up any of my broker friends or even do it myself because:

1) If I insured my car at my brokerage, I would be fired within 24 hours. I am not exaggerating or bending the truth, I have watched many a co-worker be escorted out the door for violating brokerage policies.

2) If I called up a broker friend... I wouldn't have a friend for much longer. Yes, I could legally force their hand (which is EXACTLY what the above guidelines show you how to do) but I'd be setting a friend up to get canned.

For me to get insurance I had to do exactly what everyone else had to do. Call someone I don't know, haven't met, probably never will and jump through hoops.

Before I called, I checked the brokerage's website to see that they deal with Company X, Company Y and Company Z.

"Hi, My name is Geoff XXXX and I'm looking to get a quote on car insurance"

"Sure Geoff, happy to help, could I get your address please?"

"I live at XXX XXX XXX"

"And what do you do for a living?"

"You're not allowed to ask me that"

"Sorry, we ask because we may be able to offer additional discounts"

"Discounts or not, you're not allowed to ask me what I do for a living in regards to auto insurance"

"Year make and model of your vehicle?"

"1992 Mazda RX-7 Twin Turbo"

"What's your date of birth?"

"November 4, 1981"

"When did you get your G1, G2, and full G license?"

"I got my G1 in October of 1999, I went through driver training and got my G2 8 months later, then my G one year after that"

"Are you currently insured?"

"No, my car has been in storage over the winter, I have however had previous auto insurance for a number of years"

"Within the past 3 years has any auto insurance policy in your name been cancelled for non-payment of policy premium or material misrepresentation?"

"No"

"Within the past 3 years have you received any traffic tickets of any kind"

"No"

"Within the past 6 years, have you been involved in any form of auto accident or insurance claim?"

"No"

"How about within the past 10 years?"

"No, the last claim I've made against auto insurance was over 11 years ago, and that was a theft claim"

"Just give me a minute here and let me work out your quote"

"Thanks"

"Ok Geoff, based upon the information you've provided me, the best rate that I have coming back for you is $XXXX with Company X"

"Could you also tell me the prices you have coming back with Company Y and Company Z?"

"Sure, Company Y was $XXXX+1 and Company Z was $XXXX+2"

"Thanks. Now I need to ask you a question: Does Company X have a filed rule against insuring Right Hand Drive cars?"

(At this point the broker starts to sweat because he knows he's boned)

"I'll have to check their underwriting manual and get back to you"

"I'll hold"

"Sir, it doesn't seem that they do, but unfortunately we're not looking to write your type of risk at our office"

"Well, that's unfortunate because you're going to have to, you are legally bound to provide me insurance that I qualify for, whether you like to or not, please draft up the application and send it to me to sign"

************************************************** *******

Yadda yadda yadda, that's how you get insurance.

You're going to have to do some of the work yourself, this isn't going to fall easily into your lap, there's no broker out there that's going to happily walk you down the path to cheap and easy insurance on your RHD sports car.

You may legally qualify for it, but you need to do some work yourself.

You're going to get some resistance, but here's how you fight that.

When you call a broker to insure your car, the LAST thing you want to tell them is that it's RHD. Not because you're hiding anything, but because you don't want them to start immediately trying to get rid of you.

Call and say:

Hi my name is ___ and I'm looking to get a quote on car insurance.

Provide them with the correct mailing address that appears on the VEHICLE OWNERSHIP

Give them details about the vehicle:

Year/make/model, if they ask for the VIN say you don't have it handy at the moment.

Honestly and truely answer questions like: Tickets? Accidents? Cancellations for Non-Payment of policy premium? (no point in fibbing, we'll find out anyways)

You'll muddle about with some other questions, answer honestly.

*IMPORTANT PART*

Once you've received your quote, ask for their next two closest prices AND the name of each insurance company (also look at their website in advance and see what companies they deal with, ask for the price each company offers) that is providing that rate. Write this stuff down.

If you like any of those three prices, ask the broker: "Does (company X) have a Filed Rule against right hand drive vehicles?" (filed rule is the magical wording here) If the broker says "yes" then ask for them to put IN WRITING that they are declining you auto insurance based upon (Company X's) filed rule. (This is called "calling their bluff")

If any broker puts in writing that they will not/can not provide you with auto insurance for any reason that is untrue*, they are subject to a $24,000 fine and will lose their license to sell insurance.

*VALID reasons to not provide insurance:

-Your license is currently suspended
-Your vehicle is not registered in YOUR name
-You or your vehicle trip a Filed Rule with the insurance company

Facility (not Faculty, that's a B grade 90's movie) is the last ditch effort for the worst drivers out there. You're getting pitched this because they know that you don't know any better and they don't want to put in the (minimal) extra work to write your policy.

Maybe we should look at having this post, or this thread stickied. This seems to come up a lot, and although the info is for Ontario, it's probably helpful in most provinces.

I insure at Autoplan in BC. They've never asked me anything about my car (RHD). Just insured it on the spot.

BC is government insurance. All liability is covered by ICBC. They don't ask questions because they have no choice but to insure you. Every province has different insurance regulations. Ontario is all private insurance and is the only province I'm licensed to advise on.

And I think to be clear, ICBC covers the PLPD portion - you can get collision or comprehensive through them, or privately - but for either the amount of questioning/requirements goes up, since neither ICBC or private insurers are required to provide those coverages.
