IMO, it all depends on what youre going for:
Rx7's wont be as reliable as lets say a toyota or nissan, but the driving pleasure of an rx7 is 1 or the best, bar none. rx7's are unique cars, and it takes a unique person (someone with money, determination, patience, asprins, etc) to own one.
If you want a daily driver, you could go with a rx7, but be prepared to face more "roadblocks" with it. I would go with a toyota or nissan for a daily driver. rx7's are street cars that are meant for pure performance. meaning, its a good platform to race with out of the box, and with any performance car, they would require more maintenance than a corolla or a protege.
if your looking for reliability, an rx7 is not for you. They can last, and be reliable, but to a point, a short one at that.
The best advice i can give you is, talk to someone that owns an rx7 and see what they go through. IF you still truly want one, start small. get to know EVERYTHING about the car, get some hands on experience, because to me, these are cars that you only drive in the summer, to drive all year is more maintenance.
To own an rx7, you SHOULD have another car to drive around as a daily driver. Im in the same situation as you, but my 7 wont come until a few years, and when i do get it, it'll be the one in storage, not my corolla.
all in all, gl with your choice and "don't dig a hole that you can climb out of" if you get my drift.
