What are the jobs like?
Will be coming out of University with my Level C ticket along with a CWB and a fabricator section in May.
Not exactly sure what Im doing yet, might head to the oil sands, but I would really like working in a car fab shop where the shop plays a big role in the rotary game.
Do any of you big-named shops hire fresh-out-of-school fabricators?
Im very good with a wrench and mechanical reasoning (doing my own REW swap), good with computers etc.
Just kind of getting a feel for whats available because Ill relocate to where the good jobs are.

Get to the oil sands while the getting is good. 4-5 years of clean living in Fort Mac will set you up pretty well for the rest of your life.
Once you have decent cash in the bank, then you can take a job wherever with whoever at whatever pay and not worry about it.

have you looked at the price of oil? Kind of hard to justify paying 100k+ a year to every person in that place for sub $50 a barrel.
I agree though, if you can get on out West for some good coin, do it. It`ll be worth the sacrifice in the end.

I just realized you were from BC, I'm sure there are more rotary shops around you there then there are here in Ontario, so it never hurts to apply, but you'll find that the majority of "good" rotary shops are run by people on this and other forums. Look and ask around!

When there's poor economic conditions, play money is the first to go, so I HIGHLY doubt that any car fab type shops are hiring at the moment, as stuff like that gets hit hard and first. There's no harm in asking, but don't hold your breath.
Lots of big companies in mainstream industrial sectors won't even be hiring, or they'll be laying people off (see previous response), so it may be tough finding work. Maybe you should consider staying in school and go for a B or A ticket or get cross trained in another discipline. It'll make you a much more valuable potential employee to those companies you'd want to work for, giving you more choices of who to work for.

another place that apparantly is booming for jobs is Thompson Manitoba . Its North and remote , but if you'd like the outdoors, willing to try something different and can't find a job elsewhere ,give it a look . You can probably find something on google about it

Nope.
If you have aerospace experience or your certification is relevant to aero, check out a company called "Viking Air" in Victoria. They have told me to come over there and work for them, but I have obligations here.

Thought I'd bump my own thread. Ended up getting a shop job in Grande Prairie last year, but didn't pay enough to make it worth staying out there. I quit looking for jobs for the last few months (welding that is) but would like to get back in.
I've applied to many of the big companies such as Kiewit, Ledcor, Suncor, etc, but haven't gotten anywhere.
I would love a camp job even as a helper as I think camp is the only way to make better money.
Any suggestions or anyone here need a welder helper in camp?

With the recent award of the new Navy combat ship contract (for those who have been following the news) the Irving Ship Yard in Halifax is starting to staff up a bit (still a couple years out from the main contract, but they are booked with work until then), as is the yard in Vancouver for the smaller contract. (Smaller being relative.)

If anybody is looking for work in Ontario as an apprentice or tradesman, the mines around Kirkland Lake are hiring like crazy. Great jobs, great benefits, I got family working there as a third year electrician apprentice making great money.
If I was single I'd be in Fort Mac right now.
