Hey guys, I visited NS and thought Canada isnt so bad, thinking in a few years of maybe making a move up there, just had a few questions

Is there any place in Canada that has comparable weather like Cali? I know its not going to be sunny 99% of the time but looking for something somewhat warm?

Hows the real estate like in said area?

How are career opportunities?

There's not a single place in Canada that has comparable weather. We have winter 5 months out of the year!

I think the only place you could have a mild winter would be Vancouver. But then you get rain 10 months out of the year!

I've been trying to find a way to get to Cali since I visited 3-4yrs ago. It's not as easy as it seems.

Hahaha. BC would prolly be the closest thing to California that Canada has to offer. They have rain instead of snow and its not as cold. Good scenery, too, if you know what i mean.

 

I haven't done enough research yet, I just kinda want a bit of change, Cali is fun and all, but in SB Im looking at houses at a minimum of 500k, average home here goes for about 600-800k if not millions. Basically I want to own a home, and Cali isnt the place I see myself doing that unless I somehow actually go to law school

and I see rent as money that Im throwing away

 

well, move to PEI then. houses are dirt cheap there... but theres also no jobs.

 

Head for Georgia, reasonable year-round weather, average taxes, hopefully no drought this year...

 

wherever you go it will be a compromise to cali, but a great country to live in, whereever you go

the sunniest place has the longest winters (winnipeg, manitoba)
the warmest place is the wettest , but scenic (vancouver, B.C)
the best weather place is a pretty boring place (windsor , Ontario)
the friendliest place is the poorest (East coast)

but if you're looking for a mix of good roads , good weather , good jobs , and being close to lots of things to do, you can't beat the Kitchener - Waterloo/Cambridge/ Guelph area in Ontario.

 

yea , we have the same weather all year round , 20 degrees , but with a minus sign in front of it .

I can't believe no one has even mentioned ALBERTA. If I could move anywhere else in Canada it would no doubt be in Alberta somewhere. Warm summers (no bugs/insects), winters aren't as cold as here (south-eastern Manitoba), and the car scene is pretty good. Oh and they have the Rocky mountains.

 

In all honestly Alberta's weather isn't all that great. We don't get the really warm summers, although our winters might not be as bad as some eastern provinces, it still gets damn cold here. Vancouver/Vancouver Island is probably the closest bet for weather. But as everyone says you had better like rain if you are going to move there. The real-estate market isn't all that bad in Western Canada. Not too sure how the east is doing. Things have slowed down a little bit, but prices aren't dropping anymore in the Calgary area and things seem to be starting to pick up a little bit. Also real-estate around the West coast will always be a good investment.

 

The okanagan of BC (the interior) is said to be the "california of canada" and having lived in 4 provinces, I can tell you it for sure is! :P

Its like cali for about 4-5 months, then shitty for 2 months, then a nice winter with lots of ski hills for 3 months, then 2 months of a very nice spring. Overall the nicest place in canada IMO..... the catch is that housing is pretty pricey. Your looking at $200K for a basic older house in the city(s), and $400K-700K for a new place (less then 7 yrs old)/prime location.

Here is the real downside: the lame *** province is in the process of passing a law that enables authorities to take your car and crush it if caught street-racing.... whatever happened to good-old fun?!?

 

Yeah, I love the Okanagan, real close to the mountains, nice skiing/snowboarding, great beaches in the summer, crystal clear glacier water, hell with all that who needs to street race? I wanna move there once I'm done school, and get my automotive technician ASE license.

Dude, if your coming from cali, the easiest place to adjust in Canada would be probably in BC. It rains a lot, but the weather is very mild.

I am from Toronto man...and houses are same as where you are from cali.
Thats the jest of things...500k+ i want to own my own house too..but not till i get a full time job rolling. Trust me man..stay in cali..work hard lol and make some $$$.

 

We'll I have to make serious bank to get by in Cali, I guess I need to take my LSAT's The other thing is, you guys get all the cool cars with less strict emissions I *heart* Canada haha

I HATE:

Snow, Hockey, Hockey dominating the sports pages and news (regardless how poorly they're doing), Cold temps, Shovelling, Walking the dog in -27 windchills...

Our entire taxation system, I pay more taxes than a Torontonian in a house with the same assessed value because I'm paying for their snow removal and garbage disposal!!!

People who are giddy about the snow (non-shovelling condo dwellers)...

Most CDN beer, for God's sake next time you're on vacation in the US buy/try some Rolling Rock, Sierra Nevada or Killians.

I'd be living with my family in California year-round if I could.

 

Canada's pretty fabulous, actually.

Sure we pay a hefty amount in taxes, but I haven't paid to go see a doctor since....well, since never.

Winters are cold (here in Toronto) but summers are fabulous.

We have outstanding cottage country in the Muskoka's, Georgian Bay, Haliburton and Huron Shores area...seriously. It's beautiful!

The snow isn't all that bad - this year is the worst we've actually had in a long time.

BC is wet and rainy, the Prairies are flat, blustery and boring, Quebec is French, the Maritimes/East Coast - also wet....no one wants to live in Nunavut/NWT....so that leaves Ontario. BUT - all the provinces are great places to visit. =)

Ontario is where it's at.
