Yes of course I cleaned the threads.
Some more fun today. So set the front stack up and installed the oil pump and chain. Put the crossover oring in. Siliconed the the front cover and put it on,waited an hour and torqued the bolts. Decided to clean the mating surface for the oil pan, but wait I haven't torqued the front bolt yet so I left it at an angle so the bearing wouldn't fall behind the spacer. After cleaning, for some magic reason I decided to see the play in the eshaft. Oh **** just moved everything without the front bolt on. After being angry at myself for doing something I knew I shouldn't have done. Removed the front cover and front stack to check if the bearing fell. It didn't so that was a waste of time. Restacked, cleaned and reapplied silicone.
Some time later remembered I only hand tightened the front stat gears this time around. Wtf is wrong with me today, ah well, take front cover off again and remove front stack. Now here is where it gets interesting, this time assembling the front stack, the key for the oil pump falls out. Np, put it back right? Wrong. The key refuses to stay in place now. As soon as I put the gear over it and try to push it into place, it slips out. I spent an hour trying to get it back on in place and failed. Decided to call it a day. Fun times building my first engine
I also misplaced the front bolt washer, front bolt oring, and oring for the oil filler neck so those have to be ordered from mazda >_>

Never remove the oil pump gear, that key is the worst thing to line up again. Just use a wrench to undo the oil pump from the front cover.
Also I personally would never silicone the front cover gasket. Just use a light layer of Permatex Gasket tack. The red stuff.
Only use Silicone for oil pans. Never anywhere else.

What?? your not using a front cover gasket? What are you doing about the viton and rubber o-ring? The front cover gasket acts as a spacer as well as a sealer. Without it the viton/bubber o-ring will be crushed.
Taking the pump off the engine to install the gear might be helpful. Just saying for future reference to not take the gear off. There is no need for it to ever be removed.

I've never heard of such an o-ring....interesting.
Damaged oil pumps are very obvious, I check the clearance on the rear lobe, if its good then there is no need to dis-assemble.
If its questionable, then you take the oil pump apart.
For the most part I use brand new oil pumps, which requires the gear to be put on anyways lol.

Did you know the FC gasket kit from mazda is discontinued! WTF. Fuc!en rotary. I guess you have to buy them separately at a greater cost. Time for V8. LOL.
Seriously have fun on your first engine build. Always wanted to try myself. Never did. Shouldn't really have to. I have two new engines now so they should last.

I used the gasket for the front cover on my rebuild this summer.
I was afraid of any silicone making its way into the oil passages and it helps support the teflon and rubber orings,
No Leaks so far! knock on wood

Yah, I sanded the spacer down to ~1.8-1.9 endplay
Oh fun times, I broke another bolt on the coolant thermostat housing connecting the front housing on. It was my fault this time though >_>. There's about 3/4 of a cm sticking out but channel locks wasn't able to turn it in reverse... I think Zhe has a polished one somewhere though, gonna look in his stuff before attempting to rescue this hole.

Finished todays work on this warm day. Decided to take some pictures of current progress . Now if only A-Spec would hurry up and get that turbo manifold back progress would go much quicker ^_^
On a side note, does anyone know how you take out the pressure plate from the transmission? I haven't been able to figure it out, lol
