SR20 swap into FC RX-7 - Haters gonna hate?
First off, if anyone is going to flame or hate on me for doing this or tell me I've taken the soul out of the car needs to keep it to themselves.
Figured I'll post up some pics of my buddies FC I've been working on the last while. Finally starting to get somewhere with it, yay!
It started out as an 87 Turbo chassis, he's done the black interior swap, S5 front bumper, he rocked the 13B for a while but with his luck he kept blowing engines lol. So I suggested an SR, why not. Cheap, easy to make power, parts are everywhere.
Couple years ago he had the shell stripped down and painted
Just this past year I started the swap working on it in my spare time, fabbed up some motor mounts. The white block is a chunk of Delrin we used for solid motor mounts for the 13B.
Had a custom SR > FC driveshaft built
Now the probelm with an SR in an FC is that the oil pickup is at the front and so is the steering rack on the FC.....so I had to build an oil pickup tube and oil pan.
I had a stock SR oil pan machined down to basically a flange
Then I fitted some scrap tubing together to build a rear sump oil pickup tube
There she is, fitted on the engine in the car with the oil pan flange in place. see how close the pickup tube is to the steering rack
Alright, on to building the pan to fit everything now....
Functional OEM dipstick too!
Test fit one more time.....

Soooooo close to the rack
And alomst done!
Engine landed in place, little FMIC hidden just infront of the FC rad
Still have lots of little custom **** to do, rad hoses, heatercore hoses, relocate battery, wire the alternator, starter and tap in the SR ECU in the FC dash harness.

Nice custom work there! Can't knock a guy who had some bad luck with the rotary. Hopefully he'll be happy with the SR20. Haven't had a chance to drive a car with one. I'll be interested to hear how it turns out.

On the stock turbo they make 200whp and 200 ft/lbs torque.
Also, a few guys in the US who have done this swap already have proven the car will keep 50/50 weight.
Once this car is done I'll scale it and put up some pics.

I would definately say that the FC chassis is Faarrr better than a s13 or s14 chassis Bigger better brakes from the factory and good weight balance
How does the Shifter Come up in the chassis? and did you happen to make jigs for the oil pan and mounts? :P

Thanks guys, the shifter actually comes out in the original hole, almost exactly where it should be. No cutting or hacking required.
And no I did not make any jigs. Although I may have to if there is interest lol.
The car will be up for sale once its finished, my buddy is over the car and just wants it gone.
I figured the 240 guys will be all over it since they all love FC's and hate Rotaries.

That was my orignal thought, all the drifter kids and 240 guys love FC's, ask pretty much any of them. Why not swap thier beloved motor into a proper rust free chassis, every 240 owner would be scrapping thier shitbox chassis and buying FC's.
But I'm probably not going to bother....

For the love of god please don't!
Great little project though, nice work on the oil pick-up and oil pan.
I wish I had something bad to say about an SR in an FC chassis, but it just makes too much sense.

Looking great i cant wait to see it in person i think SR20's are great that looks like an S13 blacktop...what are your plans for the SR20 as far as mods? I used to a have a T2871r on my old S14 SR very responsive turbo and their everywhere.

Good ****, Joe!
The SR is a fantastic powerplant, and the FC is 10x the chassis the S13 ever was! Great combination. I've thought about this myself a few times. Almost put a CA18 in that old blue chassis before it got buried... lol.
I could have cut your welding on that oil pan in half, btw. Can ya take some measurements of the fabbed sides and bottom? I'll have some CAD drawings made and a laser cut/cnc bent copy made. First one's free.

Maybe, I'll see. Looked at it a bit more tonight, may just look at building a complete oil pan from scratch.
Haha I figured someone would chirp me about my welding. Meh, it holds water over night with no leaks.
I'd consider it pretty decent, I've never taken any welding courses, just self taught.
Hate on though! haha
