S4 vs S5 Turbo???

This question has come up many times in the past. The 'search' function needs to become your friend.
If you're looking at a longblock, a quick way is to look at the metering pump. If it's a small, mechanical pump with a metal rod that goes to the throttle body, it's an S4. If it's larger and has electrical connections, it's an S5 engine. The thermostat housing is plastic on an S5 engine and aluminum on an S4. If you're looking at a shortblock, look at the metering pump flange at the right side of the front cover. If it has 3 mounting holes for the pump, it's an S5. If it only has 2 holes, it's an S4.
