first off, i own a 92 JDM FD, I'll be a franchisee of a restaurant in about a year, so money is no issue. I'm 21, and am a huge car enthusiest. Since the first Gran Turismo came out, I wanted an FD, but never saw myself making enough money to own one. About 4 years ago I saw a clean silver FD in Edmonton. I had an erection for days! Last year after searching for something affordable (other than another Honda) that was rwd, an more fun then my other two fwd cars. I looked at several 240's and 180's. While searching JDM importing sites, I found 2 FD's that sparked my interest. Long story short, I've had the car for over a year and have had 0 problems, do my oil changes, replaced fuel filter, air filter, ditched the body kit for oem, a few cosmetic fixes, and I've got my dream car...at 21.
Passing is not that hard, you don't tailgate for one. The car has enough power to pass quickly from further behind so you can see traffic ahead of you. Second, passengers make good co-pilots. Like stated, parts are gonna be easier to find. And who cares if some stupid kid buys one? Stupid kids buy other cars too an crash them, its just that now that they can afford a 300hp car that they drive stupidly. A 16 year old with a cavalier is still gonna drive the same as if he had a JDM FD, he just has more power with the FD. ITS NOT THE CAR, ITS THE DRIVER!!
Its all thumbs up for me, get rid of domestics. The more imports I see, the better

But since i'm not good at jokes, i guess i'll have to stick to my "custom" 3.5 inch exhaust and T78 turbo, since thats apparently all the mods I have done.

I owned an rhd fd at 19 and i knew of the repair bills and such. some *** kinda stole my first fd and crashed it right after i painted and changed parts for maintenance. I then had an icbc check for a new car but you know wat? i bought another fd. this time it was fully stock and had low kms. i knew how to check if it was a good car this time. since then i spend 10k on maintence and parts including body and paint. thats in literally 5 months. i did this to prep my car so i CAN drive it almost everyday. if ppl learn the basics for fds and love the cars, i say they should own an fd. i love rhds and for the left turn thing, i wait for yellows if i cant see. dont be a fool and gun it blindly so save 1 minutes time. it will cost u ur life (ur on the right side of the car on a left turn, if they hit u, they literally hit YOU).

I have always wanted a FD, when I looked for one to buy a few years back all I found was blown engines or 25-30,000 for mint low millage one and not much in between.
I was thinking of importing one from the states but then I found the best way was to import one from japan.
I finally found the one I wanted, type X,low km, relatively stock one owner fd in Shonan.
I paid 890,000 yen, tuned it up and got the inspection, red tape bullsh$t done. and now I drive it as much as I can.

I don't really like the whole assumption RHD FD drivers don't know anything or have no money. Waiting for my car to arrive I read every article, review, and a lot of treads on the fd's When I finally got the car I changed the fuel filer plugs wires lights (DOT & DRL), waterpump gasket (small leak) and AST just to be safe.
Oh, and changing the spark plug on a RHD, easy, no column in the way.
Last weekend I drove from Vancouver to Osoyoos and back again just for fun. 700km of twisty roads in 7hr. Found a nice mountain road to a ski resort Apex mountain rd. The Fd is one of the best looking and driving sports car Period.

But thats just me. I agree that the FD is an amazing car in any form but for me I just do not like RHD cars in America just like I would not like a LHD car over there. I have a classic Triumph as well and looked specifically for a LHD version. I also do think the the RHD'd have removed some of the rarity of the FD in America. That also has the effect of the resale values dipping a bit. As for the condition of RHD FD's, each car and case is individual and I am sure some have gotten an "honest" sale but the more common result has been that these cars are being sent here because its an easy sale while the chances of a return are non existent and next to impossible. From what I have been told, and I am no expert in Japan road laws... If these cars were to remain in Japan and needed to have the road tax renewed it would simply be too costly to bring them up to proper running condition, so sell them to a place where they can be sold that do not require this "road tax" certification or renewal. Meaning that they could not even get 8K for their car locally since it would not be able to be put on the road while here we are willing to pay them 10K.

from me. I have always wanted an rx7 ever since I could remember but to be honest, money does play a role in it. It is also rare to find a nearly stock and low km, LHD rx7 and in the off chance that you do it usually costs an arm and a leg. I sympathize with the LHD drivers when they say that rhd cars cause depreciation in the price of their cars but as rx7 enthusiasts, id hope that you would welcome new enthusiasts who buy rhd cars such as myself.

First of all I think its just dumb when you import a car that we already have here in mainland north america. Just the other day I saw some dude driving a RHD eg civic, wasn't even type R or SI or whatever-the-crap the best civic is.
I guess people think they're cool cause they have a rarer car (as if FD's aren't rare enough), but it's ironic, i have seen 10x as many RHD FD's here in MB as LHD, so it seems that the LHD ones are now the rare ones.
But if you have your little heart set on importing a car, why not import one from the states, they have about 20x (20x as many as Canada, not Japan) the FD's down there, and they're not a whole lot more than the JDM ones being imported.
Personally, if you are so strapped for cash that you can't afford the $17k for a USDM FD, maybe you shouldn't be driving an FD. Cause I've read that they're pretty expensive to fix and maintain.

rx7racerca is right. The LHD FD's are starting to see more time under sheets in the garage than on the street. I drive mine as much as I can. Thats why I bought it. And since I only have 68,000 km on the clock it still feels like a relativity new car.
It is too bad, some importers have flooded the market with FD's bought from the auctions. Most have well over 100,000 km (high for a Japanese FD). But in the long run these cars will just mean more parts; And in japan with the inspections the way they are if they aren't exported they will probably be crushed. It is hard to keep older cars in japan, easier to just buy a new one.

It is the same in Europe. German cars are inspected every year. Not a one hour Canadian Tire inspection, but a full day in the shop going through everything with a fine tooth comb. Any speck of rust on the brake lines they need to be replaced.
This is good for safety and for New car sales, but bad news for old used cars.
In Japan this means if a car is over 15 years old the owner must really love it, since he is now wasting more time and money to keep it than buy a newer car.
I would much rather these cars be exported and driven, even if it means my own FD's value goes down.

I personally have no problem with people bringing over RHD cars, even "crappy stock civics" I myself have cosidered grabbing a 5k Miata or a cheap Lan Evo as a winter beater.
Why? Simply because they are cheap and in good shape for the price.
Keep in mind that a 10k RHD 7 with a full rebuild is still cheaper than a 25k LHD 7.

I just picked up a 92 with 62k km on it that is in excellent shape. I should have it shipped to me for around $9k. If it arrives with a blown engine, well then I paid $14k for a freshly rebuilt rx7 at a reputable shop.
Besides, it's about the car for me, not the side the steering wheel is on. If I can save myself thousands of dollars by importing one, then why not?

I have just finished reading through this thread and I'm rather shocked...Some of these comments are totally out of left field. I'm currently looking into buying a RHD FD. I know that nothing is ever "CHEAP" but you've got to pay to play. Most of the RHD owners know this.

LOL! Holy **** I cannot believe this thread is still going! I haven't been here in months, and this is just too funny. There couldn't possibly be any more to say on this subject lol either you understand the pros and cons or you don't lol (Cause your stupid or possibly old and bitter or just bitter, frankly I don't give **** if you understand cause it changes nothing for me lol). Anyway I'm outta here, I haven't posted in a long time and it just feels good lol. So too everyone importing an FD, GOOD LUCK! It's been my dream car ever since I could drive, which was a fairly long time ago, so if you've already imported one or simply own one, I envy you (sorta) there's nowhere really really great to drive around here so yaaaaaaaaaaa lol. Anyway if anyone is in the Richmond Hill area and wouldn't mind taking me for a spin in their FD before winter hell during winter would be sweet too (It was the best in my FC) I would really really appreciate the experience. I know I said I'm outta here a long time ago but hey I had more to type but this time I mean it.LATER.

Just want to conduct a little poll on what u guys think of the RHD fds being imported into Canada now....
i will start by saying i dont like it one bit.........i drive a 94 touring and cant stand the fact that the market may soon be flooded with a bunch of miled out crappers from Japan that take away the prestige of owning one here in Canada.... I would often take pride in the fact that i could be downtown calgary and the chances of seeing a ferrari were greater then coming across another fd. Maybe i am selfish in thinking this but its just the way i feel about it.
so if u wanna take part in this pole simply state... a thumbs up or down....followed by your opinion on the matter.........it would also be helpfull if u said what kinda rx7 u drive........especially if u have a rhd fd.....then of course u can feel free 2 defend yourself and convince myself and any other LHD FD owners why we should not feel threatened....

I'm pretty sure there's a few in Vernon and the Okanagan - my brother sent me some pics of a JDM he drove there a couple months ago - unless it happened to be yours. I have family in Vernon, Armstrong, and Kelowna. Besides having vacationed out there for at least 35 years, we spend a lot of time visiting - and I assume by rip through Kelowna, you mean crawl, unless you plan on doing your ripping between 11pm and 5 am - lol.
For some reason, your post looking for the elusive FDs that I'm sure are out there, and yet like everywhere else, are rarely seen, made me think of the Canadian Wildlife Service's classic "Hinterland Who's Who" tv spots....

This thread really should die. It's hard to think of any other topic that is more beat-to-death, or offers such an unrelenting stream of unsubstantiated opinions on all sides.
edit: okay, that felt good to get that off my chest! Don't get me wrong, I love FD's, and my choice would be LHD or nothing - RHD's won't fit a 6'3", 36" inseam driver. I just also don't have any particular problem with people choosing to indulge, or start, an RX-7 passion with a JDM. But for heaven's sake, it's a car, they depreciate, JDM or NA market, and some of them do get neglected and abused - I've seen good and bad examples of each, and it proves nothing one way or the other.
And thanks Terrh for the compliment on my old post - I enjoyed writing that one
