ROFLCOPTOR, Question:

Does Mazda sell "Crate" engines for our rotaries? I'm trying to guage the cost of a rebuild for my 84 gsl se and the closet rebuilder is in calgary that I know of. I can drive to regina for bout 10 bucks, so if a new engine is only a couple hundred dollars more, I'd rather do it that way. Let me know!

Yea obsessed i talked to you dad the other day i got your guys number, if ya wanna give me a call i have a giant box of FC part you could go through and se if ya eed anything.

And for tobias, we do sell a full engine but the price, even at my price, is pretty insane, costing around 4000 for a decent engine. in my experience so far with my car, is to go to RX7 specialties in Calgary. they do amazing work. im gonna be getting a Turbo engine from them this summer and i know ill get good results, so check out them.

As far as I know, Jordan, the engines you get directly from Mazda are rebuilds, just like you'd get from RX-7 Specialties or whoever. Their rebuilds cost significantly more than RX-7 Specialties in Calgary, however, and that being the case, if they DID sell actual NEW engines the cost would likely be quite high. Of course, any rotary rebuilder can build you a new engine; you just have to specify that you want new rotors and new irons and away you go; you'll pay a premium but you'll know exactly what you're getting.

A couple of years ago I talked to RX-7 Specialties about getting a rebuild for my first GXL, which ultimately ended up as my parts car. Shipping was actually not too expensive; they ship truck freight in a special rotary engine crate. You lift the new engine out, drop the core in, call the shippers to pick it up and take it back to Calgary and they refund you your core charge. I think the shipping was about $150 each way.

There's lots (way too much, actually) of heated talk on this forum and others regarding RX-7 Specialties. Some love Adam, some hate him. I can only speak from my own experience when he ported and installed an S5 turbo on my TII as well as plumbing in my boost controller and a couple of other minor things. He did a good job, was fair in his billing, and he and his other mechanic worked until 7:30 on a Friday night to finish the job so I could bring the car home the next day. My only complaint was that he plumbed the boost controller solenoid backward, but that was easily remedied with a quick look at the manual when the car wouldn't boost the next spring. Like I said, they were rushing to finish the job for me, and it was a very minor issue.

Bottom line is that I don't think you can find a rebuild for a better price anywhere in North America, and he'll build exactly what you want; new rotors and irons, street port, higher or lower compression rotors, later model lighter flywheels, whatever. Heck, he had a couple of 20B's lying around the shop when I was there! Just depends on what you want and what you want to pay. At the end of the day, if I push the boost up one PSI too far and pop my motor, I'm pretty sure that's who I'll call when all is said and done.

Oh, BTW, the MacBook is working great!

basically what chuck said lol. the only new engine for rotary's we sell are the Renisis for the 8's. other then that its a basic rebuild with 1 year warranty, but the quality isnt always top notch. as said before goto Calgary and get RX7 specialties to do an engine up for you.

Just to add to what's already been said; the current price on RX-7 Specialties website for your engine (84-85 4-port 13b) is $2150 with new housings. Over the phone Adam will tell you the adjusted price for various mods such as street-porting (about $175 as I recall), high compression rotors, etc. Have fun, and if it doesn't work out, maybe I'll just sell you my TII

*Laughs* If I had the money for the TII!!

Good to hear about that mac book. Got to love insider specials huh? I hope it made a good christmas present.

I've heard alot of good about RX7 specialties. If theres one thing I've learned in retail bussiness, is that it ISNT just bussiness. Its ALL personal, and how you approach some one makes a huge difference in service and what people are willing to do for you. So I'll give them a call and be as straight up and cool as I can be, see what we can work out. I just need an engine for my car *Chuckles* I want her running badly! I have to finish a rebuild on our jeep though so I can sell that and turn a profit to buy my enigne.

I hope to have it running for the racing events this summer. Thats my goal, but who knows if its a doable goal.
Thanks for the hint Gerry! Hugely appreciated

Well ive tried dealing with rx7 specialties but they were just pissing me off. First I call inquirings about a 20b then he asks me what i have done to my car and concludes I dont need one so he wont sell me one. Then later i decided I would rather go with a bridge port, then he tells me that I dont want that and that I dont know what I want. Telling me a street port should be the only engine someone should get and that bridges are bad. Well I was like WTF! Do you want to make money or not? So I just decided **** adam and didnt deal with him.

lol: Adam can be a bit of a blunt instrument in his advice, but I think he's had enough experience with the more radical mods that he'd rather be blunt up front than deal with all the fallout and complaints afterward from a mod that maybe shouldn't have been done. He's said a number of times that you shouldn't even think of a 20b conversion unless you have at least $20k to spend, and his own 20b conversion has been something of a nightmare to get consistent power out of, so he has his reasons for being cautious. As for the bridgeport, I know he is quite conservative with porting; one of the knocks on him is that people have sometimes accused him of not going far enough in removing metal on his streetports (on the other hand, he ported the wastegate on my turbo before installing it and must have done a really good job, because running 10psi on my Profec B I get absolutely ZERO boost creep; that thing flows like crazy). For all these reasons, most of the harshest criticism of him has been directed at him regarding the real high-hp mods and projects, whether fairly or unfairly. Even his critics will shrug and say that if you just need a decent engine for a decent price he's a good deal. Like I said, I got through the initial stuff and did deal with him, and feel like he really came through for me and gave me a very good deal, especially in terms of what he charged me for labour on the job. Anway, 'nuff said

Oh, Jordan...one other option you might consider (my son Adam is making sure I put this in) is a jdm engine; they're available for around $1000 or so, although it can be difficult to find a 4-port 13b. Finding a 13bt, however, is really easy, and 6-ports are fairly readily available as well. Stock and availability really vary from week to week with all the vendors; just depends on what they get in in a given shipment. Most of these engines have 30-50k km on them, and they can be an economical alternative to a rebuild. Just google jdm engines and you'll come up with pages of vendors, many in Canada.

Just make sure you do your research on the vendors, Jordan. I've been looking for an engine and every company has an extremely bad review -- as most of these business do not specialize in rotary powered cars. Then again, not every business is perfect, so be cautioned, but that was obvious, wasn't it :P I'm still trying to find a credible vendor myself. If Adam sold JDM engines, I would have no problems whatsoever with buying one from him.

FWIW, I really like Adam. He's a good guy and a rotary enthusiast (Have you seen his rotary tattoo??). I'd trust him with his opinions. He's probably just sick of people coming up to him and asking if he can get their engine to produce 500+ hp on a budget. He's been good to me, really knowledgeable and let me stick around the shop to check everything out. He even showed me the shop's red 20B FD that was in Modified Mag. So it's kind of true about sometimes it's not just business, but it can be personal. Adam probably wanted some background info on the car just to know that you weren't going to blow the engine less than 10 km after and get into legal disputes with him.

I was looking reeeally hard at a JDM importer by the name of http://www.jdmracingmotors.com/

They carry alot of the 13bt equipment I see. The only problem is, while most engines low mileage, I cant see the engine, hear the engine or be promised that it will run. Was it fogged when was taken out to prevent drying or rusting?

Beyond that, isnt there going to be complications mounting the engine? I mean, they drive on the other side :P Does that make the wiring harness for P/S and such backwards? I have no experiance with reading electrical diagrams. My way of pulling an engine is a bunch of color tape with numbers so I can play match the color coded number when I put it back in.

I was looking over RX7 specialties website aswell, he they claim a lifetime warrenty on their Apex seals. Thats a pretty bad *** warrenty, so that has be intrigued. The price on JDM equipment though... thats also tempting.

See, I've never driven a car with a turbo before. I've never even felt what a supercharger does. I think it'd be great to have my RX7 putting out 205 horse power vs 130 on the 13b I have now. Street porting it would only had so much. However, is that turbo more hassle then its worth? I mean, I could get that engine delivered to my door from jdm racing cheaper then having Adam rebuild mine.. I just dont know if it'll work.

mmm, thoughts?

lol u guys.... is anyone else going slightly insane waiting for the snow to melt? also a track meet would be sweet and also a albert street friday night cruise i would not know which car to bring tho lol. The motor shop in calgary is good. its weird u had a problem i have been there twice now and the guys seem fine. odd u had issues i even asked about 20b swap into my 85 SE. speaking of such things anyone wanna buy a GSL SE for 500 bux i know its sad but no one will buy the car because its totaled the motor is really strong as well as everything else in the car. 1000$ worth of work left its that or i turn it into a track car to race at kings park speedway. that seems like such a waste of an SE though. as for my turbo the motor is still on blocks i have been really sick lately and have not seen 1 rx-7 yet this winter thank god. probably would have to kill someone.

hey everyone, first time on canada foum... From Estevan, but living in moosejaw for 2 years now. i own a 88 Gxl (silver) currently with no motor, as kal tire decided to rev the pis out of it and blow a seal.

downside, they're refusing to repair or replace anything they broke.

my brother is in regina and has a 87 base getting dusty in the garage.

if anyone is looking for a N/A fidenza flywheel and centerforce clutch combo... i can give them a great deal, and deliver it myself.

need to sell to fund purchase of new motor.
check out my thread on the forsale section for pictures.

thanks

Just gonna throw a nice bump on our post, if everyone has seen this is a huge as post now with over 13,000 veiws and almost 500 posts. from what ive seen in most other area posts on the forum we have a pretty solid group of guy here in the regina area.

we have gotten together on 3 occasions now, turn out was decent to ok at best, you all know who you are who came, last meet we had 5 people come down which an absolute blast.

so just to see how the communit is doing i was seeing if we were all up for beers/food sometime this weekend or the up coming weekend. as we all know its starting to warm up pretty quick and rx7 weather is soon approaching so i wanna get as many of us together for on big meeting before the really nice weather hits so we can organize something like a cruise or a get together at the ledge or even another night of discussion and beers.

i wanna hear some more imput from any one so start posting!

I have storage issues so that is why it is out, also I only drove it on nice days with no snow at all on roads. For now its parked at the apartment complex I live at. So I won't be driving it to much and when I do it will be to work to use the lifts so i cna work on the car.

Also I have a solid deal for all the rx7 guys in the city, I can get us a full detail plus a new full underbody coat for under or around $200 so if any one is interested let me know by posting on the forums or private message.

Just letting everyone know that it looks like my 88 TII is going on the block; I have a 2005 350Z (I know, I know...pistons) coming from the states so the FC will be moving on.

The car has 170k, and is reputed to have a j-spec engine with about 60k on it, which may or may not be street-ported (going by what I was told when I bought the car 3 years ago). Since getting the car I have made many upgrades to it; partial list follows:

-Ported S5 turbo
-Greddy Profec B Spec II boost controller
-Pillar pod with boost gauge and afm gauge
-Rtek 1.7 ecu
-Viper 720cc secondary injectors
-BDC (Brian Cain) modded, ported and polished throttle body
-HKS topmount intercooler
-Racing Beat 3" turbo back stainless exhaust
-FD fuel pump
-SPEC Stage II clutch
-Tokico blue shocks
-Couple of other little perks like custom neoprene seat covers, Kenwood powered sub & Sony xplode speakers, JVC (I think) head unit, custom leather steering wheel cover, aftermarket shift ****, etc.

Body is good; has a bit of surface rust on the lower front corners of the doors, a spot at the lip of the sunroof and a spot inside the A-pillar on the passenger side

I'm currently running a conservative 10psi boost; S5 turbo with the ebc hooked up spools very quickly, throttle response with modded throttle body is very sharp. A wideband to ensure proper mixture would allow boosting to about 12 psi on this turbo; I haven't pushed it because I didn't have wideband available. Mechanically the only glitch is a grind in 5th gear (very common on these trannies) which is pretty easy to get around with rev matching. Most of these mods were new last spring, including the clutch, which only has about 5k on it at this point. The car hasn't been dynoed, but I've been told by others with a lot of FC experience that it should easily be good for mid-200's whp. Who knows, I just know that when I tried to drive it once this winter (on dry pavement on the highway) I couldn't keep it hooked up with the all-season tires - squirrelly right through 3rd.

The car is in Moose Jaw; if you're interested or know anyone who is, call Gerry at 692-8932. I haven't set a firm price, but I'm hoping for around 7k.

Congrats on the Z, Gerry. They're great cars.

I've seen the car in person, and it's definitely one solid car! Sounds great and full of turbo goodness. Good luck with the sale!
