I was planning to hand lap them for a few hours using the technique shown in the Mazdatrix video with permatex valve grinding compound.

Re-nitriding is not necessary typically as the factory nitriding actually penetrates the irons surface beyond minimum spec usable depth.

The deeper you go, the less hard it is, I'm going to call BS. you might have a surface hardness of Rockwell 40c in the surface but that will become more soft the deeper you go.

Having not seen the Mazdatrix video, I'm now very curious about the hand lapping. Basically smear valve grinding compound on two plates and then lap them against one another for an hour or so?

Yes I believe that is the procedure, that's how the rebuild video I have showed how to do it...

Huh, I'll have to give that a try next time I build an engine. Too bad I have already blasted and painted the irons I'll be using for the Cosmo...

I've also heard of people using thick plate glass and fine grit sand paper to resurface irons at home.
