Welcome to the board also. +1 for bcrotary.com, there seems to be a pretty active community in the lower mainland and the Island. Well-maintained FC's can be very reliable cars - even turbos, so your wallet may escape relatively unscathed - if you resist the urge to make big HP . In Calgary, a nice FC turbo would probably be above your budget, though not by miles: here's a nice example https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=713674, excellent car (I've seen it), lots of quality mods, but currently needs a front iron, so you'd have to figure in cost for a new front iron and seals, etc, needed for the repair, plus labour if you needed someone else to do the work. Prices in the lower mainland would likely be better, they were even before the current boom made most stuff expensive here, and the Calgary car market doesn't have much competition from nearby major cities or the US, so it's always tended to be inflated compared to the rest of the country, new or used. Like any other relatively uncommon car, finding a good one at a fair price may take a while - there's not going to be 10 of them in the local autotrader every week (well there may be, but 9 of them will be $1500 beaters).
Good luck in your search, hooking up with some local rotary fans and letting them know what you're looking for probably has the best odds of matching you up with a good car. Again, like any used car, paying more for a better example will tend to save way more than you spend in the end with repairs to a higher-mileage/more worn car. Just saying don't try to save a lot of money up front.
