my new toy: 2002 Land Rover Discovery SE

If Terrh can make his own toy thread, so can I.

I've basically had a hard on for Land Rovers my entire life. I've always wanted one. After the family stable (me and wifes basic convayence and off-road car) started to act up, it was time to trade in my 2006 Jeep Liberty for something. Anything.

It took me about a month of searching and waiting for a used one to turn up, but finnally the wife gave approval on one of the most luxurious, classy, trucks ever to come out of Solihull.

This Land Rover comes fully equipped, save one drivetrain feature I have to swap in later in its lifetime.

What does this mean for the Rx-7? Since an investment return paid for some of the Land Rover, I have enough cash left, and then some to pay to finish the TII swap in my FB. As we speak, Im preparing to change engines.

Nicely done, your reference to Solihull brought back some childhood memories. I would like to get an SUV myself. I would really like an X5 but they are out of my price range at the moment.

X5's are nice and all, but I'd take a range rover any day. I mean, you pay all that money and dont get nearly half the bells and whistles of the Rangie.

Like Clarkson said. The X5 has hill desent control to get down, but they forgot the Low Range gearbox so It can never get back up.

This disco is great because I can fit all my Rx-7 swap parts in the back in one load.

So you bought a Land Rover Discovery because the Jeep wasn't reliable? Interesting choice as Land Rover has quite the reputation for being unreliable and having all sorts of small issues (sounds like an FD3S almost doesn't it? )

Enjoy the new ride.

Hope you have good luck with it, my buddy has one and has not had great luck. His rad leaked and the dealer had to change 4 times until they got a rad that did not leak. Reliability issues asside, I have always liked them as well.

If it doesnt leak, you need to bring it back to the dealer to exchange it for another one that does (because its not a real land rover).

Joking aside.

It depends on what you call reliability. Parts wise, its cheaper to buy a new Jeep if anything breaks.

Parts are super cheap for land rovers, unless its a new Range Rover or some such. Its the labour that kills.

Like anything they wear out, but they arn't as complex as one might think. It regular to buy an old Discovery 1 that has 300,000kms.

I mean, alot of familys in the world depend on Land Rovers to get around. Farmers use them for workhorses, etc.

The exact words I said to my wife when we were looking at it was:

"People dont buy Land Rovers because they are reliable, look nice, or are good on fuel. People buy Land Rovers because its a Land Rover."
