Mechanical gauges..info,Please.
I am Going to put in some mecahanical type gauges in my car to Monitor OIL and Water Temp..(B i can do a Clean install as not to have Fluids,Blow up into my Dash!) .,So,I Was wondering Where I could put the Sender units for the Gauges,and If I Possible,should I just use the stock Locations(realize that it would render Useless the Dash Gauges)?.Thanks Guys..any INFO is appreciated...STYX.

For water temp you can drill/tap the stock waterpump housing, there should be room for another port. For oil temp you can either put it in the pan somehow, or get one of those gauge adapters for oil pedestal(better option).
Are these electrical gauges if they have sender units?

+1 tap the rear of the water pump housing. There's a good spot right under the stock sender. I welded a bung into my oil pan for the oil temp. That'll tell you the temp of the oil at its hottest, while the pedestal is easier, that's the oil at its coolest.

Crap..Is there nothing Easier?..I don't want to Drill into ****!...Oh..and Made a Mistake!the gauges are for oil Pressure.but the other is for Water Temp.I was Contemplating a Pedestal for the Oil.As for the Water Temp,maybe a Spot on the Lower hose.Like a Piece with a "bung" that I can put inbetween two pieces of Lower rad hose...But Thanks, Black 91 N/A.I was thinkin about Oil temp too,and that was Likely where I was going to put a Sender(bottom of oil pan).I saw IceBlue's Blog on his MODS.he shows Where to Put the Water Temp Sender.I just don't want to Have to go through all that.(Lazy,and I'm doing this basically Out in the middle of a Street!)

If you need pressure, then pedestal is the best way. The RB one is nice and relatively cheap. You could take temp there as well from the same block in the future. Putting it in the pan gives you worst case oil temps, while in the block gives you the temp of the actual oil going into the engine.
For the water, you could do something with fittings, but same as with oil you'll get variable readings whether you put it in the water pump, or right after the radiator. There is no "right" it just depends what you want to monitor.

ISC Racing sells an adapter that goes in the rad hose. Put it in the TOP hose, as this is the hot side. It will be slower to react and won't let you know if the thermostat is malfunctionning, but it's easy.
It's not that hard to drill and tap the housing. Sure it's a little scary, but take your time and it's ok. There's a big flat spot and the passage is plenty wide, so even it it's not perfectly centered you're fine. I'd estimate ~4 hours to do just that, as you've got to take it off the car to do. EVERY other mounting location has drawbacks, it's the ONLY one that has none.
I've seen it debated a lot as to what's better for oil temp, and I think either is ok, but I'd rather know where it's the hottest, but the cooler temp is an indication of how hot it is, you just need to adjust the limits downward to compensate. Ultimately you'd have a temp probe in both places.

We used to get our oil temp from the pan, however I have been told by top engine builders you should be concerned about the temp of the oil going into the engine, after it has been through the oil cooler or coolers. We get our oil temp from the Racing Beat aluminum block that goes under the oil filter. Same goes for water temp, you need the temp of the water after the radiator.

Mazda Competition gives guidelines of temperatures in the pan and at the water pump outlet, I'd think they know what they're talking about.
That said, I'd say that either way would work, as long as you know the max temperatures to shut it down at. The two temps will be related by the heat imput of the engine and the heat shedding capacity of the coolers. The best reason for the water pump housing though is the termostat, because they do fail, and you'd want to know about it.
