Mazda in the Mountains 2006

Any venue ideas? I was thinking going south around the turner valley/black diamond area.

I'd like everyone's input.

Annual Mazda in the Mountains Meet.

Anywhere that has grass, parking lot and is wide open would work. What time frame are we thinking this year? Costs? Prizes?

I didnt attend last year, but I should be around in the MX-5 this year.

no_name - it's an annual Mazda meet.

Alak - I have no idea on time frame yet...I will post a bit more details later this week. I just want to get a feel of some ideas people have milling around in their heads

I've done overnight. Okanagan Miata Club hosts the miata rally over a weekend. Works well, there just has to be lots to do.

We could go camping?

How about Johnsons Canyon. It is just west of Banff, you get to drive a long partially divided highway (1A) off the #1 with lots of twists and curves, gives a good rush to drive. Then at the Canyon there is a nice hiking path to take to a couple of waterfalls. Perfect for the car enthusiast with an uninterested spouse that needs something to occupy her as well. http://www.johnstoncanyon.com/ I would suggest staying away from the end of august as too many people get preoccupied with back to school. Why don't we look at july or the first couple weeks of august.

Problem with driving in a well-known, well populated area is traffic. We get 25+ Cars ripping through there, it could cause a ruckus. Especially the way you Protege guys drive.

Of course theres always the leasurely drive up there. Within reason.

I think a less populated area would be more appropriate if spirited driving is the case.

Could do this and drive Hwy 40 south over the Highwood Pass and then out via Hwy 541 to Longview and Hwy 22 north to Black Diamond - a cool, fun to drive route, though a bit longish - I'm guessing 250-300kms? The Highwood Pass/Hwy 541 portion especially is nice and twisty, and the turbo cars will like it, higher elevation than Rogers Pass, so significant HP losses for NA cars

^^The Bow Valley Parkway (Hwy 1a in Banff) that goes by Johnston's Canyon up to Castle Mountain and Lake Louise is also a cool drive, but tends to be very high traffic, slow moving tourists in rental cars and RV's in the summer months. My favourite drive when traffic is light, along with Westside road from Kelowna to Vernon

We drive RX-7's here. We get only 300kms to a tank of gas. I dont think long drive is much of an option, unless there was a fuel station and bank machine every 100 kms.

If I attend, I'll be in my miata in any case. 40MPG. Suck on that.

I wont have an RX until at least December. But I might break down and buy a Cosmo before then. But I'd much prefer an old RX-2 or something of that flavour.

I was going to put a rotary in my Miata (seriously). But I talked to a guy who did it in his NB (2nd Gen) and it cost him well over $15,000 US. My car is just THAT MUCH MORE difficult to fit a rotax in. Bastards. Oh well. Supercharger it is then.

Whomp Whomp Whoooooooomp.

**** im up for a meet. I live in bc, near the alberta border, i would concider going as far as edmonton. I was thinking of having some lunch, go for a couple hour cruise out in the turner valley like you said, and come back to calgary for a good night of drinking.

This sounds pretty decent gregg. Id be up for just about any fun to drive twisty piece of road with little to no traffic tho... well i guess who here isnt... Ive got no suggestions for the drive, but definatly a stop with a GOOD place to eat would be on my priority list.

If you do a search for kananaskis, cruise, longview you may find a thread from a couple years back about exactly that cruise...has details about route, gas stations, twisties, phot-ops, etc. It was a post by me.
I'm at a crappy 3rd world internet connection right now, so I can't waste valuable packets at the moment....

I dont have any sort of a race car, i only have a stock 12a, no rats nest, racing beat exhaust, and MAYBE 130 hp. If i went, i would just go for the ride, im not a racer anyways, unless you come out the super twisties in jaffray

Logically, we dont usually exceed the speed limit. So stock is fine. When I go on cruises with the Miata club, its usually 2 groups (that start as one). The lead and the follow. Lead cars are usually Turbo. Everyone else is stock. Hahaha. I have to max out my Miata to keep up with the Turbo guys. But the usually hover under 140.

My vote is in for somewhere with food, windy roads, and few rocks... I don't want any dings on my newly painted FD/body kit ><
