Dammm, so I've been buying the blue filters for my Protege5 and my dad's Protege for years thinking I'm doing the car good? SHould have saved the $5 on every filter and bought Fram from Wal-Mart.

are the black filters made by nippon ?? as far as i know they are the oem supplier in japan..

you can usally find nippon replacement filters for a decent price... i think they are grey in color

Napa Gold (Wix). They're "only" $10 + tax. But you can save a few bucks if you can find an AC Delco or Purolator. They're as good or at least close.

Last time I checked they were made by Fram. Stands to reason too--- Fram makes the cheapest-to-produce (therefore lowest quality) filters available. And they can undercut just about everybody else when wholesaling them out to retail chains like Canadian Tire, Walmart, etc.

Of course, outfits like Canadian tire know that the average buyer doesn't know jack **** about filters and will always pick the least expensive one available. So these retailers stay away from more expensive suppliers to increase both their sales and profit margin. They may keep a limited supply of better quality filters to fill the needs of more discerning customers, but the real money is in the el-cheapo crappy ones.

BTW, even the so-called "top-of-the-line" Fram filters are useless. You lose twice with those ones--- first because of the poor quality, then a second time because of the steeper price.

Boycott Fram. Period. Your engine will love you for it.

sorry, that was a cheap shot...

but yeah, i'm sure they still filter oil, there's just a greater chance something will go wrong with them...plus sometimes you may not ba able to tell just by looking at oil...
i think if you read that article comparing the different oil filters you can see that there is a big difference between oil filters...although i won't tell you to take the results in blindly

If anyone can crossreference a part number for a reputable oil filter with STEEL filter ends (at the very least), that would be great.

I'm trying to crossreference a fleetguard number for us. They are a quality brand with alot of time invested in the industry, they have quality stuff for trucks and they do passenger cars as well. http://www.fleetguard.com/fleet/en/p...od_fg_lube.jsp

i think the point here is that the stock black OEM filters don't cost much and are a good. sure, we could go out and all buy some of these expensive filters (Purolator), but i think it's a matter of principle here...well, maybe not. i'm just pissed i can't get the black ones

The price difference isn't that dramatic. Which is why I brought this to the Canadian Forum attention in the first place.

Spend the few extra bucks, look what most of you (including myself) have been using religiously thinking they've been using up-to-far filters.

That is correct. I inquired about these filters a few months ago with 2 local Mazda dealerships...both had nothing on their system.

There isn't a website we can order the black ones off of? Its just a matter of convenience for me. I mean, since i change my oil every gotdamn month, i can't be driving out all over the place looking for a purolator or watever filter. God only knows nobody keeps the k&n filters for our cars in stock.

Where do u guys get ur purolator filters?

dont know why i clicked on this link seeing how i am about 1200 miles from yall. anyway the part number for the black "usdm" filter is B6Y1-14--302-9A, as seen on the mazdaformance site. thought i would post the part number just incase yall wanted to see if your local dealer could get ahold of them.

Every once in a while someone from a car club will ask me why the factory doesnt support us. This post is one of the reasons. People inside do visit these sites and read the posts. The last time I asked i was told "why would we support people who constantly bash us?" It is no different than the dealership I work for. Why would I support people who say bad things about us, are negative about our service etc. Our techs are trained to work on stock vehicles and tune to the factory specs. (which all have tolerences) We try are best to make everyone happy and do our best. I am very happy that RX-7 Club.com has been supportive of Scarboro Mazda and will do our best to continue supporting you.

While they don't get all of my business (only when I can't find components elsewhere) North Hill Mazda here in Calgary has proven (to me at least) to be knowledgable and efficient. They can source out parts for my first gen, and they still have at least one guy in the parts and service department who can accurately and quickly diagnose problems with even the first gen rx7s.

But with all due respect to the folks at Mazda there are some legitimate gripes directed at the dealerships.

First, they are in the business of selling cars, so there is a mild conflict of interest there. They'd much rather sell you a new car (and take yours in on trade if you practically give it to them) than fix your old one. Yes, they make money in the servicing dept but sales is more lucrative. This is true with all dealerships, not just Mazda.

Secondly, many of the guys who were around when rx7s were plentiful have moved on, and the new guys are more adept with Miatas than anything even remotely rotary.

Third, selling "OEM" filters manufactured by Fram (at a premium!) is like pouring us a glass of **** and telling us it's champagne--- not the best way to cement customer loyalty.

Finally, Mazda parts have always been considerably higher in price than those from other Japanese manufacturers. True, Mazda has recently lowered the wholesale prices on many parts. But most dealerships aren't passing those savings on to their customers.

Can't speak for "most" dealers, but "some" dealers (i.e. Scarboro) are willing to give groups like this one, a bit of a break and support on parts pricing. While they undoubtedly hope you'll remember that when it comes time to buy a car, or get service, its still a real $$ advantage at the counter.

If we're interested in the other OEM (black) filter, lets talk to our OEM Dealership connection and see if he can help.

Canadian tire only stocks Fram and Motomaster (a Fram cross-dressing as something else). I bought my Purolator at a service garage. Most places that fix cars carry them or equivalent for around $8 to $9. Also the quick-lube places may carry them. Or you could go to Napa for a Napa Gold (NOT Napa Silver- they're not much better than Fram), which costs about a buck more than the Purolator and is made by Wix.

What do you guys really know about oil filters? Has anyone flowed a filter? Done SAE efficiency tests? Made coffee with one?

My point is: An OEM specifies what a part has to do, and how long it has to do it for. You stick to that schedule, you're o.k.

These "Better Quality" filters probably outperform the "Fram Style" filters AFTER 8 OR 10 THOUSAND KMS. For the 3000 kms that your filter will be on your rotary, don't waste your time or $$: 6 coffee filters in a coke bottle will probably provide adequate filtering.

Said another way: you don't buy a bus ticket to California if you intend to get off in Ohio.
